Async is not for improved visuals, but improved performance. Tessellation improved visuals to a point. Sub pixel tessellation only hurts performance with no visual improvement.

Well not directly, but indirectly you can increase Image Quality and AI because you have more performance with AC.

Tesselation is as much of an improvement in visuals as it is in performance. The concrete walls in Crysis 2 probably would have crashed the game if they had that amount of polygons in a traditional model (running out of vram/ram, choking to well below 1 fps). Instead they only reduced the performance by some 40% iirc.

Similarly, Async compute allows for new concepts that will directly improve visuals, like a decoupled particle simulation pipeline (mentioned in the other Warhammer thread) which potentially allows for more particles to be rendered or them being influenced by compute calculations like physics and collision detection.

That was worth a laugh.

Good for you
I can rephrase this to be more dramatic and say that Tesselation has probably improved the rendering speed of this super detailed concrete barrier by over 9000%!

Did I miss something? This looks amazing for a Total War game. The units with randomized details are wicked.

You didn't have your green tinted glasses on.

DX12 favors AMD because their hardware is better designed for it. Unlike the feature set 12_1 hype, and we've been working on DX12 with MSFT for 6 years lies.

AMD either guessed the future better than nVidia when they were designing their uarch years in advance, or they knew what was coming and nVidia didn't. Odds are it's the second and they were working on what we see now as DX12 before nVidia. Could be because of XBox1?

What AMD did was designing their hardware and software with HSA in mind. Every single software and hardware from this moment on will be designed with that initiative in mind. And who brought HSA? AMD. Who brought Mantle which is in every low-level API? AMD.

AMD played long game. They did quite a great job. If you want to know why it will benefit whole industry, look at latest Apple patent that lets you use Macs in a combined way. Think of 2 Mac Pro cylinders with 2 CPUs, and 4 GPUs as one big computing unit, that this technology allows.

Interesting performance comparison... the GTX1080 is without a doubt fastest overall. But it also has a much greater variance in its fps high and low, compared to a fairly consistant graph for the 390. I think in this case the GTX is fast enough you wouldn't feel it, dropping down to mid 50 range, but in a game that scores say 10FPS less on average it may have a more choppy feel despite the higher frame rate. Just early drivers or something else?

Yeah, we probably cannot even come close to arriving at that conclusion by looking at a fps graph. FCAT would be the way to test "smoothness" or "choppiness". Don't ever go by fps charts.

Agree. What gaming experience have showed us is that min fps and fcat is what should be used. If average fps doesnt reflect that its of no use. It makes benchmarking a mess but there is no way around it.

I am in for financing it on AT !

Looking forward to run a benchmark. Hopefully it will support CF.

Someone said it will support multi-GPU, so that means it should do CFX/SLI, and hybrids (if they implement it like AOTS did).

SLI is coming, most likely with the game ready driver.

Its confirmed by CA that there will be SLI support.

DX11 looks like performance as expected. GTX980 easily beats 290X.

But AMD tanks in higher resolution. That's odd.

GTX1080 will be awesome here

Good core usage too. They really got the AI spread.

i rather have more complex a.i than graphics or more complex physics running only on the gpu than graphics

also you cant really get a good measure of gamegpu... they rarely use any top end card of amd god knows why

CA should have Shogun 2 and Rome 2 remake with the new engine.

They had to return their Fury card to AMD.
i heard that some time ago
and yet they did some testing on aots again after that.. 2 days before the one of homefront

but seriously benching a 290x vs 980ti isnt really the best idea (not to mention they could sell that 7990 and get a nice 390x..)

These are DX11 benchmarks?

Using google translate it seems that the DX12 patch is coming some time after release.

wish these companies would stop playing around and release the dx12 or vulkan versions on initial release of the game. Not too interested in playing this in dx11

There is a good chance the DX12 patch will be a day 1 patch if they are sending reviewers copies of it.

From everything CA says its certainly not going to be a day 1 patch. Also it wasn't CA sending out the "benchmark version only" of the game. It was AMD.

I would guess DX12 comes 1-2 months after release if CA does as usual, unless there is delays.

They say a little after release. 1-2 months is not a little after release especially since they have it running already. The doom guys havent released theirs yet for vulkan afaik tho so probably 1-3 weeks.
