PDF - What do you use?

For years I have been using CutePDF as a primary source for printing a document into PDF format. The biggest thing that I dislike about it is when I create a PDF by using CutePDF, it brings up a dialog box asking what I want to name it and location. The problem is that it then creates the PDF at that location and name but does not give me the option to open up the folder it was created in. Each and everytime I create a PDF I am doing it with the intentions of emailing or putting it on a thumb drive. Therefore, each and every time I create a PDF I have to go through the process of finding the directory twice! (once when I select where I want the PDF to print to and again when I have to browse to that folder to access that PDF). Iwant a feature, such as how firefox or internet explorer handles downloads, where it prompts you if you want to open that directory. I am sure other PDF software has the option which is what leads me to creating this thread.

I would like to get an idea of what PDF software everyone uses. Please list what you use and what features/functions you use it for?

For example, I use CutePDF for printing a document to PDF format. I like how it has a small footprint. I hate how I have to manually browse to the directory where I just made the PDF.

So what do you use? How do you use it? Do you use your software simply for creating a simple PDF? Do you create full fledged, user inputtable PDFs? Do you use it for editing static PDFs? Also, if it isnt free or opensource, post a price.

I use OpenOffice Writer, and export to PDF, and I use Foxit to view PDFs. I don't really use PDFs much, so I can't tell you the ins and outs, but this system works well for me.

Does anyone know if there's a PDF program that will allow printing in a given way.
I want to print the first page of PDF files as a single full page, and then for all the rest of the pages in the documents I want it to do 2 per page.
As it is, with Foxit, I have to manually go to single page, print page 1, then go to the rest of the pages and set them to 2 pages per sheet (and for some reason I also have to rotate it otherwise they come out in the wrong order, eg p.3 on the left, p.2 on the right).

Another feature I would like to see is joining a PDF with another PDF and pick the order of the pages.

With the little work I have with pdf's I rely on Foxit. Mainly viewing the files.

So i assume you use their free version? They have "professional" products for sale don't they? Any experience?

I think all the professional features will work in the free version, but it'll leave a watermark. That'll give you an idea of how it works though, and whether it'll suit your needs or not. I /think/ there's also trial plugins you can use, but you'd have to look at their site to be sure.

I get everything I need with Nitro PDF (5) - with direct links to Word and WordPerfect. It has the same GUI as Word - and same color choices w/ribbons.

I use Adobe professional v. 6.0 LOL - purchased it many years ago.... BUT since I am using x64 based systems it chokes so I have to use CutePDF to 'print' PDFs from the apps that don't include a PDF creator.

For those wanting to combine and add documents together you can do that in Adobe Acrobat. yOU CAN DELETE PAGES, CHANGE THE ORDER, EXTRACT PAGES AND ADD COMBINE PDFS (SORRY CAPS). IT's really expensive, but I'm still using V6 that is very old. The new versions of Adobe are just slower...

I still use CutePDF or Adobe Acrobat to Print to PDF. They both work fine for me.

Adobe will open the PDF after you Print to PDF, but not the folder containing...

I used Sumatra PDF for a while, because it's tiny and opens in a split second. I had a project where I was checking for correuption in PDF's and I had to go through about 30,000 pdfs...Sumatra was fast enough that I could open 500 at a time. MY complaint about Sumatra is that it jacks up the formating when you print. So it's useful as a viewer, but not for printing...so i dont use it for everyday anymore.

I am looking for something that will open up the folder containing the PDF after you "print" the PDF. Anyone use anything that can do this?

Nitro PDF does exactly that.

Yes, and also, Foxit pdf editor does it too. Editor, not reader. but as far as I know foxit pdf editor isn't free.

I use:
To read: foxit

To create: I avoid creating .pdf's because they're such a nuisance for people to work with (unless they pay for an app). If unavoidable (rarely) then I'll use openOffice or a conversion service on the web. I have the Nitro PDF which wwswimming pointed out to you, but almost never use it.

I strongly dislike .pdf.

Sumatra can not open protected pdf files either. http://forums.fofou.org/sumatrapdf/topic?id=12328
