For years, many Republicans have claimed that even as they demanded a crackdown on undocumented, or illegal, immigration, they supported a robust system of legal immigration. Even President Donald Trump nodded to that tradition in a tweet on Sunday when he insisted that illegal immigration "is very unfair to all of those people who have gone through the system legally and are waiting on line for years!"

But, in fact, the vast majority of congressional Republicans this year have now voted for Trump-backed legislation that would not only crack down on undocumented immigration but also severely constrict legal entry into the country, including for millions of those who, as Trump put it, have been "waiting on line for years" to enter legally.

Trump is just trying to duh-vert attention from his legal problems. He did, for a little while, if at the cost of appearing even more inept than previously.

I think the purpose of the meeting on national TV was Trump was going to provoke the Democrats into threatening to shut down the government to prevent the border wall spending. Trump stuck his foot in his mouth and offered to shut down the government for them.

The threat was carefully crafted to be broadcast by the invited lying media as an intimidating public display of Trump's masterful negotiating skill, which is tantamount to stomping one's feet and holding one's breath like a three year old.

I'm not sue what was Pence supposed to do exactly? “Shhh, Mr. President, you’re embarrassing yourself!” Trump was handling things exactly the way he wanted them to be handled: like a train wreck. He was probably told not to say anything, so why be there at all? Or he was told never to contradict Donald, so when Donald contradicts himself Pence has nothing he can say.

I don't think Trump really knows when he's being played. He tried to be smart and get confrontational with Nancy and Chuck, so that it plays out well in front of his base, that he is fighting for the wall. Chuck goaded him into admitting that he's threatening to shut down his own government, and once he took the bait they just probably chuckled to themselves and let it play out. Pence looked super uncomfortable throughout the whole conversation, and was probably wishing he was anywhere else in the world, but on that chair.

Pence was a prop. It is an old strong man negotiation technique where you show off your power by having other powerful people there obviously being subservient to you. You see dictators doing it all the time. But it does not work all that well in the best of situations, and certainly not when your opposition feels that they are on equal footing as you.

Trump is trying to show them that he is in charge. He still does not fully understand that the President is not superior to Congress, but equal to them.

If the President wanted he could or should have his party bring it up for vote. They should be able to pass the House and how difficult can it be to reach a compromise to appease 2 Imdependents and 7 Democrats?

How about some economics, where we can talk about what would happen to various industries if illegals just were all kicked out tomorrow....and some more economics about the actual cost of illegals on welfare (or not on welfare) vs the cost of the wall. Talking about the fact that most illegals don't come across the border would be a good start, and make me believe this ISN'T just a talisman meant to rile up the base. I'll be waiting a while I think.

If the wall is then shown to be an effective solutions for this dire problem, then I'll change my mind about it. The problem is Trump vacillates between "we've secured the border SO TREMENDOUSLY!" and "we need a giant wall or else the border will never be secure." Take Trump out of any meetings, negotiations and decision making and we might get somewhere
