"Pelosi says no separate votes: "Not on abortion, not on public option, not on single payer, not on anything.""

Tomorrow is going to be interesting. I'd say passage is about 50/50 chance. The press is playing it off as inevitable, but in order for it to pass something like 8 of 12 undecided members (many who were originally in the Stupak block) need to vote for it.

/popcorn.

Let's make predictions! My guess is, as of this moment: 216-214 in favor.

*Edit* Not sure if anything I said qualifies as commentary, so I'll add this: If this ends up being true, I'm glad Pelosi took this stance. Not because I'm pro-choice, but because it strikes me as the right way to have this vote.

If this bill passes it is going to be a disaster to the job market.

My prediction:
Dems lose the house in the fall
Obama loses in 2012 due to high unemployment

Republicans take over and repeal half the bill, if it survives all the court challenges, and we start all over again in 2016.

An old ROTC adage my unit had comes to mind. "Do what you think is right, apologize later."

Getting oneself killed while doing what's right doesn't seem to make much sense to me, especially when what they gain may not last.

I think we need to go with Barrack Obama's own words that the American people deserve an up or down vote.

The Dems don't mean we deserve an up or down vote only when it's a "progressive" Utopian item on the agenda, is it? But when it's anti-"progressive" issue we the people should be shut out of the legislative process?

Isn't that your normal prediction.

Either way though, a single lumped vote is less likely to pass.

ProfJohn on health care:

ProfJohn said:
Tomorrow's election is the closest we have to a public referendum on Obamacare and if the Democrats lose in the bluest of blue state then it is all over, at least in its present form.

ProfJohn on the 2006 election:
ProfJohn said:
Democrat pick up 4, maybe 5 in Senate leaving the Republicans with a very small majority.

In the house, very close to even, within 5 either way and most likely with 1 or 2. If I was a betting man I would go Republican.

ProfJohn on the economy:
ProfJohn said:
It looks like the worst economy in decade never turned out to be that bad after all.
As many have said it was nothing more than a mental recession.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Just wanted to ask you how that whole 'dead' health care bill was coming? Doesn't look too dead to me.

^ it is dead in conventional terms in that the Dems can't pass it with a traditional yes/no vote and instead are using trickery to get it passed.

As for the past quotes: I am sure I can find two year old quotes from anyone in this forum that make people look foolish. How many threads did we have about Rove being indicted? Or Bush impeached? Or that the Iraq war was lost or that the surge would fail??

PJ apparently doesn't remember what he actually said, just that it seemed like a good idea at the time, and that it was pro-republican.

If he does, he won't admit it, anyway.

You know you can always just say 'Man, I was wrong again'.

That's the political attitude that got us in a war with Iraq. Did you support the war in Iraq?
That wasn't the political attitude that got us into Iraq. It was "Do what's profitable. Lie if you have to."

Then this bill will not pass and they will go back, take their time and overhaul healthcare correctly instead of passing this boondogle!

Still with the predications? You can pretty much count on the exact opposite if your past predictions are any indication. Thanks.

With Teague going no my best guess is that the current vote total is 215-215, meaning it fails.

I did at the time. It wasn't until Bush failed to properly execute a war strategy that I turned against it. I think Hussein was a prick and the world is better off without him. I supported the war mainly because I felt Hussein was a genocidal maniac. That said, Bush then made a lot of very poor decisions that led to utter chaos in the country, in particular disbanding the military.

I also believed what was said about WMD, if for no other reason than we had given them to Hussein in the 80s. Bush really exaggerated it, but we did find a few things. I was also in ROTC at the time and that was pre-cancer diagnosis, so I've become more liberal since. Not that I ever really considered my self conservative, I basically agreed with Colin Powell on most issues.

I think it's going to pass. 216-214 is probably dead-on. The wafflers right now are mostly from more conservatives districts, meaning that as soon as the bill gets a majority, the remaining undecided will split to "no" since their votes won't be needed and then they won't be penalized in their districts. The logic suggests the bill should not get any more than the minimum number needed.

I give it a 75% chance of passage.
