Hmm dunno what happened with my first post...

I have a PIII 700e @1008 1.85v. It's kind of hot at full load ~50C and I want to bring it down with a peltier. My Montac Arctic Circle is rated at 100watts and I used a spread sheet to calculate the number of watts produced by my current setup, it turns out to be ~40watts from the normal 23watts at 700 1.65. If i get a 55watt peltier, the stress on the heatsink will be 95watts? Does that eliminate a 72watt peltier seeing as it would put 112watts of stress on the heatsink? I just want to take the temp down a little bit, maybe to the 25C-35C range with extrememly low maintenence and risk of condensation. 55watt peltier good enough for that?

go for the 55 watt as the 77 watt is going to be too much work, extra case cooling etc.. really you need water cooling for a 77 watt peltec for it to work at it's best

I hope that helped

A peltier is an electronic device that gets very cold on one side, and very hot on the other. It is commonly used in extreme cooling measures, and can be air cooled, with a VERY good heatsink, or water cooled. Does that help?

You've misunderstood the "55W" labeling: that refers to the maximum amount of heat that can be transferred across the peltier. The peltiers own heat production can vary between 0-130W, for a peltier that size, depending on what voltage and current you put it on. To transfer 40W it would probably emit 20-30 W itself, but it's very hard to tell. But that peltier is too small, in my opinion. I would go for at least a 72 W peltier, since with the 50 W one you run the risk of having to crank the voltage/current up way over the peltier's efficient working "region". And THEN it would start emitting heat.

A good power supply should be able to handle a 72w peltier. You may also recoup some of your heat by running at the same speed at a lower voltage, reducing your overall temps. I am not familiar with your heatsink, but you have to be pretty far over to get the peltier to runaway on heat. If you push it a little too far, then your heatsink temps get on the high side. The ones that are way too far are pretty obvious as the heat sink gets very hot very quickly. I have used a 78w peltier with a single fan alpha ho7 with ok results. Worked better with my alpha 3125 and best with my current water cooling.
Hope this helps, let me know if I can help..
