Another case of people with too much time on their hands.

That is what I thought at first.

I mean they are nice and all ... and i can appreciate the time and labor that went into them... Very cool... but what are they for? Just a case of some talented person with loads of time?

So . . you're asking what the point of Art, in its entirety, is?

yeah, creative creation is a total waste of time

I suppose it can be looked at that way... but... hmm... kinda hard to explain, but... ok... it used to be a pencil. Now it is art. It cannot be used, but it can be admired. so, is went to functional to non-functional. It is no longer functional, because to use it would be to destroy the art. If it were a plain stick of wood, it would be like someone took something plain and non-functional and made it better because it is now beautiful and admirable, and that makes it better. With a pencil, it went from functional to non-functional.

Hard to explain in words, but i know what i mean. not saying that it is a bad thing. it is quite beautiful, but i just dont get the reasoning.

I think you did get the point though.
A popular modern theme is to take a utilitarian object and elevate it to be art which often necessitates eliminating its functionality. This process challenges your perception of the object so elevated, as you've demonstrated.
Now what does this teach us about pencils? We've reevaluated the humble utilitarian pencil, we've conscioulsy chosen to reconsider and analyze the role of a pencil and, perhaps we've gained a touch of insight into that role and can further appreciate it in our daily lives, thereby enriching our experience.
In that way the "art" of pencil carving has achieved a utilitarian purpose...

As crazy as it sounds, I understand exactly what you guys are saying. DJHeater, you really expressed a cool perception of said pencils!!

Also, something with which art used to be created (the pencil) became the art itself. Nice reversal.

To the posters above me.

First thank you for understanding what I was trying to say... whew, it can be kinda hard thru this medium.

Next... Ok, so I get it. but to me, it is not a postive thing. It is not a "wow, look what he did to that pencil!" or "the boring old pencil is now a gorgeous peice of art"... To me, it is more like "that was a perfectly good writing instrument. Why did he have to Make it non functional?" or "couldnt he have used a plain being of wood? That, at least would have been an improvement, instead of just a trade off." or even "Shrug, whatever he wants to do, but now he needs to go buy a pencil".

I guess I am just a weirdo, huh? But at least he got us to into this discussion.

I am the same way. So at least we can be weirdos together.

Karen, mwtgg, I think you're putting way too much stock into a pencil.

I'm trying to come up with more ideas of functional -> art. Drawing a blank. Is it a waste to paint a picture instead of a fire extinquisher? Is it a waste to paint a fire extinquisher in the first place? Can the beauty or awe seen in the pencils overcome the loss of functionality? I sure think so.

Well, there are certainly more esoteric renditions of this principle...
Duchamp's Urinal is the forefather of this type of juxtaposition

McCracken's Red Plank and his larger oeuvre can take the discussion in the direction of what the relationship of the art to the environment it inhabits is and so what is a proper environment for art, not to mention what is art...

Anything that furhters discussion, inner or outer is good...

Oh and there's Flavin's lights too... Is the light art, or is it the environment the light creates?...

Can you tell I was an art student in a former life?
