Pencil trick giving no joy

Hi folks. I have a brand new ABIT KT7-RAID with a 750 T-bird. I've connected the L1 bridges using a 0.5mm mechanical pencil. Under the magnifying glass they appear well joined, with no trace pencil mark from one bridge to the next.

The first time I booted the system, I got an error message stating the CPU was unusable or setup wrong. When I entered the Soft-Menu BIOS utility, CPU speed was set to 600. I changed it to 750 and rebooted. This time the CPU was recognized and displayed correctly (100x7.5).

So far, so good.

I reentered the BIOS and changed the setting to 800. Upon reboot, the system displayed (100x7.0).

I've tried several settings with the following results:

BIOS setting 600&650 --> result: boot failure
700 --> (100x7.0)
750 --> (100x7.5)
800 --> (100x7.0)
850 --> (100x7.5)
900 --> (100x7.0)
950 --> (100x7.5)

all settings ending in 00 result in 100x7
all settings ending in 50 result in 100x7.5

So what do ya think? This my first ever attempt at the "pencil trick" I read about. Do you think that's the problem?

Anyone have experience with this trick (especially on this board)? Did it work for you?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Redo the pencilling.

Don't worry about the Firsttime boot at 600Mhz. It's common for the KT7.

had the same problem before with same mobo and cpu, just erase couple times and try it again, it will work eventually. make sure the mark is dark, and it doesnt touch the others next to it.

Also had the same problem, forget the pencil and pick up a rear defogger repair kit. Once your done you can forget about it.

I got tired of wondering when the next time I would have to take my HSF off and re-do the pencil lines would be, since it always wore off within a few weeks. I purchased the rear window defogger paint, and used a pin to apply it to all of the T-Birds and Durons that I have in one shot. Worked very well the first time, and I now do not have to worry about it anymore. The defogger paint is permanent, and much more conductive than the pencil graphite.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I hadn't seen anything about the pencil thing wearing off until today. I'm gonna go with something permanent.

Two more questions:

1. I read somewhere the loctite defogger stuff has to dry for 24 hours before using the CPU. True or false? What's your experience? Technonut?

2. Are conductive pens available a Radio Shack?

Thanks again.

1. I don't know about that since I didn't use Loctite. However, the stuff that I did use said it would be ok to use immediately. Furthermore, the kind that I got came as an epoxy, so I didn't have to bother mixing it (no need for it harden).

2. No, they do not sell conductive pens at Radio Shack.

I used the Loctite stuff, and I did not wait 24 hours. It dries VERY fast, and I was able to use the CPU's right away.

EDIT: The Loctite rear window defogger paint comes in a little jar that does not have to be mixed with anything else. I just shook it up very well. I went through my Wife's sewing kit and found the thinnest needle I could to apply it. Since it dries fast, I dumped enough of the stuff to do a couple of CPU's at a time on a small piece of foil to dip the needle in. I also had a bottle of fingernail polish remover handy in case I made a mistake to wipe the defogger paint off, but I did not need it.

I purchased the defogger paint at my local NAPA auto parts store

Do any of you have a link where I could find out which L1 bridges need to be closed for a TB800, or is it all of them? Also, is this process with the defogger kit very risky (could it damage your cpu for good)?
Thanks

maybe not totally unrelated, but some BIOSs have a setting called Speed Error Hold. I have it in my BH6. If that is set to enable, then the system will use the default (internal) multiplier. The 700 and 750 deal you explained is strange. However, the first error message you listed isd the type of message that got displayed when I was setting up my BH6 w/ a celeron 366@550... I'd check that setting and disable it if it isn't already. That may solve your problem...

LohCash...
All TBirds and Durons require that ALL L1 bridges be closed to enable the MB to override the default multiplier of the CPU.
The Loctite treatment is semi-permanent in that it will last a long time but can be removed using acetone without any trace of it being there.
