Take the train to Jamaica station from Penn, then catch the airtrain straight into JFK from there. Jamaica is probably ~20 - 25 minute ride from Penn, and the Airtrain takes maybe 10? minutes fom there (not too sure, been a while since I flew from JFK).

MTA website has the schedules.

So you are taking the airtrain? From Penn you have to change in Jamaica and then get on the AirTrain to JFK. Last time I took it, it took about 15 mins from Penn then another 10 for the walk through Jamaica and then about another 10 on the AT. The best part about the AT is that it will take you directly to your gate.

So my estimate is about 30 minutes all in all. But the last time I used it was over a year ago so YMMV.

Yeah, the last few times I've taken it, it's taken about 30-35 minutes? You might lose a few minutes if you can't perfectly catch the AirTrain, but it shouldn't be too bad.

thanks all for the suggestions... looks like air train it is. i was thinking about taking a taxi but i guess that would be too costly. i'm taking the amtrak from harrisburg, pa to ny.

Isn't there a shuttle from Penn to JFK for like $15? More cash than the AirTrain, but no transferring. Way less than a taxi too -- I paid $45+tip from JFK to Times Sq.

The AirTrain is only the segment from Jamaica to JFK and around JFK. He'd be taking the LIRR from Penn to Jamaica. Just don't fall asleep and miss your stop like I did the last time I flew out of JFK. That was a costly mistake.

Cabs to JFK don't have a flat fee, so don't take them (it will cost you a lot)

There is a bus directly to JFK from Penn Station - I would recommend that as it is easiest.
Otherwise take the E Train to Jamaica and then the Airtrain

Negative.

It stops at all terminals; you still have to walk to your gate.

Not quite. From manhattan, it's a flat fee to JFK. $45 plus tolls (and tip if you want). You can request that they take a toll free route, but that will take much longer.

Would not recommend the bus if you're in a hurry, as they may not stop at your terminal first and you could waste a lot of time that way.

Would not recommend the E Train either. Took much longer last time I tried.

Go the LIRR/Airtrain route like many others here have suggested. Plan on 35-40 minutes total.

yeah, thats what I meant....stops at the terminal. However the walk to the gate wasn't very far.

either take the cab for flat fee or LIRR to jamaica then transfer to airtrain.
E line is a total mess, it's a hit or a miss --- anywhere from 25 minutes to 2 hours.
you can save a few bucks if you take the E but it might cost you your flight...

unless you leave like 2 hours early.

Don't cut it too close

As Akubi mentioned, the E sucks for reliability

I usually take a cab or the shuttle bus from Penn

... also, next time book a flight out of LGA if u can. WAY easier and cheaper to get to LGA than JFK

i know it's closer but it's not on a rail line. so you're limited to shuttles and cabs, aren't you?

A cab from midtown (say Penn or Times Sq) to LGA will cost you about $25-27 and about 30-40 mins depending upon the time of day, traffic and whether you're taking the Queensboro Bridge or the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

If you're traveling at 6:00am first flight out, then the cab ride will cost you closer to $21-22 and you'll be there in 20 minutes or less.

If you have more time than money, take the N train to Astoria Bl. and switch to the M60 bus (which is very regular & frequent) and will drop you off in front of your terminal.

Getting back & forth to JFK is a freakin pain

Every time I go to LGA, I take the LIRR to Jamaica, the subway from Jamaica to Jackson Ave, then the Q33 bus to LGA. The whole process (from my house) takes just about exactly 2 hours from the time the LIRR train leaves.

JFK is LIRR to Jamaica, then AirTrain straight into the airport. One hour, maybe an hour and 10 minutes. I vastly prefer going to JFK. Besides, I don't like relying on buses / cabs - too much potential for delays (traffic accidents, construction, etc) especially when I'm trying to catch a flight.

I would budget for ~45 minutes. I've only done with from west 4th on a sunday morning, took about that much.

Huh? Getting to JFK is far easier with subway (A/C) takes you straight there and then that automatic train. With LGA you gotta go to Astoria and then wait for a bus...

You don't wanna take the C, it's a local

The A from midtown will take atleast 45 mins to get to Howard Beach without any delays or schedule changes. If you're on the A train at off-peak hours, it'll take even longer. Past 11pm, forget about it - I've waited for 20-30 mins for that train early morning / late nights. Add in the Airtrain time.

With LGA - M60 is pretty regular. If, for any reason, it doesn't show up you can grab a cab.

The only time that I'd chose JFK over LGA is during the winter when you really don't wanna be waiting for a bus.

If you take the A train, plan for 1 + hour depending on the time and day of week. Weekends suck as do nights (after 7 PM) cause you can spend 30 minutes waiting for the train. It usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours from picking up my luggage to my parents place in Lower East Side Manhattan during non peak hours.
