Penryn mobile in MBP?

OK, so I finally have enough cash to get a MBP, but now I see that the new Penryn mobile CPUs are coming out soon. The question is when will they be available? A few weeks? A few months? Is this likely to affect the cost?

I know I shouldn't be obsessing about a slight performance/efficiency advantage, but I'd like to have the latest CPU. I also understand that this wouldn't be a redesign since there is no new chipset yet. Man, this money is burning a hole!

Product MacBook Pro
Recommendation: Don't Buy - Updates soon *
Notes * On November 1st, Apple added a 2.6 GHz processor option and 250 GB Hard Drive BTO options, but the remainder of the MacBook Pro line remained the same. This seems unlikely to represent a true update, but may push off a true revision a few months.
Last Release June 05, 2007
Days Since Update 226 (Avg = 186)

should be here within 1-2 months. definitely wait for them. apple usually refreshes stuff in february and march. remember when the mbp was first announced? they bumped the speeds as soon as they started shipping for everyone!

edit: lets hope they get the 9600GT for the gpu!

I've got a little time to think while I'm waiting for my ADC student membership to activate. I'll wait maybe 2 to 3 weeks for a Penryn, but I'm definitely not waiting until the new Centrino platform is out this summer. There's nothing wrong with the current crop. Even the base model MBP blows my P4 out of the water.

I was in the same boat waiting and waiting for Penryn MBPs but the fact that I needed a new computer forced me to purchase a santa rosa MBpro in november...i couldnt be HAPPIER....I was debating whether penryn mbpros would be released at MW2008 and decided that it was not worth the gamble of waiting and going even longer without the new comp....I am very hapy that I did not wait for MW2008 to make my purchase because I would be forced to wait longer....the bottom line is that if you need the computer, buy it now.... new technology is always on the horizon, if you keep waiting, you will never buy anything.

FWIW, the benefits of Penryn are very slight compared with the current santa rosa chips....compared side by side, both processors running at the same clock speed, the penryn has posted only about a 2-5% performance increase and a slight reduction in temps.

I had a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro before I made the move to my Quad desktop and I have to say it was the most awesome, most perfect laptop I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Unlike the previous CD/C2D models, it ran cool and quiet. I had absolutely no problems with it and the LED screen was amazing. I miss that computer!

The Tegeril guess on this front is as follows:

Leopard probably needs an OS update to accomodate multi-touch functionality of the trackpad (10.5.2).
This update will most likely coincide with the shipping of the MacBook Air.
Upon the release of this update, Apple will unveil the MacBook Pro with an integrated multitouch trackpad, available immediately or within a few weeks. MBP will have Penryn.

Do you all really think they will be releasing the new MBP in the next couple weeks? I was thinking about getting a new computer and possibly an Apple so I hope so.

Will the price increase if they update them or will it stay the same?

It's all speculation with a bold-face capital S. The people who talk don't always know. The people who know won't talk. When I started this thread, I didn't realize just how tight-lipped Apple is about new products. I have to admit that the anticipation is exciting though.

That said, as soon as Intel officially announces the mobile Penryns, I'm betting Apple will be one of the first to sell it. They have been on the cutting edge several times before. As I said before, I doubt this would be a complete redesign because there isn't much else they could change right now. The new Centrino platform, Montevina won't be out until later this year. The only things Apple could change now are the CPU, trackpad and GPU. Everything else is already top-of-the line.

I'm waiting another week or two with fingers crosssed, but I'm not holding my breath until I hallucinate

When are the new processors coming out? Will the Montevina or whatever be so good that it would be better to wait until then?

FWIW, both HP and Sony now offer laptops with Penryns, but they aren't actually available yet. HP gives an estimated build date of Feb 21 for any CPU (DV6700T). Sony says the date is unknown (AR series*). Also, I couldn't find any Penryn preorder options for Dells. No, I'm not even considering buying any of these computers; I was just looking for Penryns.

The Penryns are coming, but it's still unsure when. It's nothing to get too worked up about though since the performance and efficiency improvements over Merom are slight. I'm just waiting a little bit to see what happens. I've waited this long, so what's another week or two?

As far as Montevina is concerned, it looks like the major improvements are 1067 FSB and DDR3-800 support. I haven't really looked into it much because May is too far away for me.

*The AR Premium is apparently available, but it's $3300! It only has one 4-pin IEEE-1394a! If they don't include a 1394b at that price, the least they could do is add an eSATA port. Weak sauce.

Thanks for all the answers!

I guess what I'm asking is do you feel that the Montevina upgrades will be such an advance that it would be worth waiting till May? My laptop still works but its old and crappy and has a broken DVD Rom drive. I really need a new computer for next year because I am going abroad (in August) but I figured I'd get one now and learn how to use it... but if Montevina if its gonna be insane i can wait till may

Why? You can just get an eSATA expresscard for the MacBook Pro. Are there any/many laptops out there with eSATA anyway?

eSATA is external SATA, it gives you a port to hook up external hard drives (that use SATA) and is much higher bandwidth than any other port available today. My issue with it is that the majority of users probably have no use for it (sort of like other ports... firewire 800 for example, and FW400 to a lesser degree as well) and it is only useful for the one thing, hooking up external hard drives.
