When is Penryn suppose to come out? And when it does, does that mean a drop in quads and duo cores?

Penryn as in the mobile processors codenamed Penryn, or just in general any processors (desktop, server) that are part of the Penryn "family"?

The first one is already out, and some venders are charging $1200. Wait another 45 days and some slower versions should be available.

Well if the speculation is true and AMD does not intend to actually ship the (broken) Phenom B2 stepping chips in any sizable volume then the price of phenom will have negligable pressure on the prize of Intel's quads.

Why would Intel care about the impact of 10k or 20k phenom chips, even if AMD priced them at $5 a pop? If AMD were capable of shipping a few million of them then Intel would have to respond to price pressures.

But there is no price pressure, regardless of price, if the availability is insignificant.

Yeah I don't think this will impact the pricing of Intel's quads at all. Simply put, this launch was non-threatening to intel, both in terms of performance and value. Intel's not going to kill their margins until they have to, and right now, there's no reason they have to.

In January is when we'll see some price movement. Hopefully by then AMD will be able to get some volume out, and Intel will be releasing their next gen chips. Whether that price movement is up or down remains to be seen. :|

We probably won't see price movement, just chip movement (all the chips will move down a price bracket with the cheapest one still being $266 or whatever it is at the moment, but it will be clocked faster.)

He is talking about the Penryn launch though...not Phenom...

I agree I dont see any reason phenom will cause pressure on Intel to drop prices...Some of its cheaper line is already faster then the phenoms tested....AMD already cash straped from previous quarters of price wars leads me to think they wont adjust much thus leading to NO reason for prices to much for the forseeable future.

As for Penryn, I think there could be some slight adjustments only to make room for different speed grades of the penryn to fit into existing price points for the older kentsfields. Otherwise not much reason to lower anything.

My guess is that it will come out between Jan 7th and 10th, because that's when CES is. As for prices, that xbit labs thing says it all. No price drop on quads.

Here's a question: how does the level of cache affect overclocking? I thought I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that more cache means lower overclocks. If that's the case, then it seems like the Q9300 with 6 megs of cache could be a very good OCing chip.

Tarindel, more cache may have a lower overclock as the greater cache generates more heat, but generally parts in the same class ( eg q9300 vs q9400 or whatever ) with more cache are generally better binned too and that offsets the heat production a little bit. the lower cache chips are quite a bit cheaper too tho.
