For some reason, I've been seeing at least three references to PenFed in some of the threads here especially when it refers to loans / mortgages. Are there any PenFed members here?

I compared their rates with the local credit unions in Florida, and they seem to be slightly lower. I also so on Epinion.com that as of recently PenFed's customer service has decline drastically.

Besides the lower rates, what other benefits does PenFed have?

I'm guessing at least one of those was me. They have some of the lowest rates out there for mortgages/auto loans, customer service has been absolutely phenomenal, you get 1.25% back on regular purchases and 5% on gas with their credit card plus 5.99% fixed on bt's (not that you should pay above 0% but it's good for a fixed rate). Free 1K AD&D insurance. They are very highly regarded at FW Finance. I refi'd my mortgage 2/06 with them and I've been 100% satisfied since then.

Thanks, RossMan! Reading these is going to keep me busy for a while.

Their CC is the best one out there for maximum monthly cash rebates. The only issue I have is that their website is poorly designed (I do like their authentication method, wish more places would adopt it) and getting your electronic monthly statements is not very intuitive.

Yeah the PenFed credit card is great. I've contemplated trying to join the PenFed credit union just for that reason. However, so far, I've stuck with cards that are just slightly better for me. E.G.- Citi Driver's Edge pays 6% back at gas/grocery/drug stores for the first year (and can up to double your earnings with the Drive Rewards program). Also the AmEx Blue Cash card goes up to 1.5% back on other spending at 5% at gas/grocery/drug stores (not just gas stations like the PenFed card).



I use a combination of a couple different credit cards to earn more rewards. For example, the Citi Professional (3% at restaurants, office supply, rentals, etc.) is good complement to those other primary cards.

I just closed on a mortgage refinance with them a couple weeks ago. Heard about them first from fatwallet. The whole process was amazingly simple. In fact, I was kind of surprised how easy it was. I was like, wow, it doesn't take much work to get huge sums of money!

Does anyone have a quick answer to what down payment options are available at Pen Fed? Will they accept 5 to 10% down payment?
