Guys, this is a kickass deal. If I don't have my Nikon D50 DSLR already, I will jump right on this. The Pentax has the best optical view finder in the class and the stock lens that comes with is also useable, unlike the junk lens that comes with Canon DSLRs. It's also slightly better than the lens that comes with my Nikon D50. For those that look for a lens upgrade with a reasonable price, look for the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 for about $350.

Oh, the big difference between the DL and DL2 is that the DL2 has 5 auto focus points instead of the DL's 3. It helps if you shot a lot of fast action, other wise not much difference. You can't find the DL2 in the US because it's being marketed by Samsung as theirown DSLR.

Or the Pentax 16-45 F4 for $400.

I Just got mine today. So far i am very impressed. It got here in 3 days with free shipping. Gonna have to stock up on memory cards though. Overal the camera is bigger then I expected, which is good. Picture quality seems pretty excellent so far as well.

If you don't mind, post some images for those who are considering one. My friend is torn between this and the XT so example pics would help her decide.

Just saw someone has previously posted example pics...more would be nice though.

This is a really great deal. The fact that there's no tax for most of us and free shipping makes this a steal. The only thing I can really complain about the camera is a lack of rechargable battery. The rebate has me worried as well. One good thing is that the rebate looks like it can be used anywhere. But it doesn't say it can be used with the camera AND lens. The rebate clearly states it can be used with the body only. If you're buying this guy you may want to check into that.........

It's a nice price, but the camera only has a 23mm image sensor.

Some key points for those who are wondering... (I've owned the camera for slightly over a month).

First, Pentax strictly recommends against use the Lithium rechargeable packs (CRV-3 CR-3.. whatever they are) because the output voltage on those is too high. When I bought my camera I picked up a pack of Energizer Lithium batteries and have taken over 360 pictures on them and they show no signs of slowing down. My next purchase is rechargeable NimH.

Second, according to the manual the camera only takes up to 2GB SD cards. So unless someone has a 4GB and can confirm it works I would make sure you don't get ahead of yourself.

Finally, the kit comes with a larger box that holds the two separate boxes. As was posted earlier, people on FW have said it should be no problem and I would concur since the camera body box has the appropriate code.

If i were unscrupulous I might buy a body and return it just so I had a receipt that showed I purchased the camera within the timeframe. I paid $520 for mine and it's worth every penny.

http://picasaweb.google.com/randyf25/NatureShots <-- a few shots I have put up on the web so far. I am no professional (not even close). The dragonfly and swallowtail were taken with a Tamron 672D 75-300mm lens borrowed from a friend. I have since purchased a 472D 70-300mm Tamron from keh.com (highly recommended). The sunset is with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Check this out, I am on dial-up so these are not real high resolution.

Is the first bundle with the 1gb card worth it? The individual things on that site seem to cost a bit much (judging by the 1gb card and card reader prices on the right)

Also, how/why is this camera worse/cheaper than other DSLR's like the ~$800-$1000 Nikons and Canons?

Dang it! I just bought a few weeks ago a Canon S2 IS from Dell for $300 . I like it, but a DSLR I guess it's a lot better than that.

I suck as photographer anyway .

It's a fact, that SLR has a 23mm Image Sensor; I dont get the joke, what is so funny?

OK if you could enlighten me. I would like to know what is wrong with this 23mm sensor? This is Sony's sensor that is used Nikon D50, D70, D70s, Konica-Minolta 5D, 7D. Do you expect full frame sensor for dslr in this price range?

I have own a Canon 10D for 3 years and I much the images from the Pentax DL eventhough autofocus falls on the slow side compare to Canon or Nikon dslr.

Here's a shot with the DL I just receive today.

Do you seriously consider this camera better than D50? What about RAW format? Does it support it? I'm interested in post processing images. Rebates stay until October, so there is time to think.

Um... Where did anyone say it was better than the D50? It's half the price at least so that is the attraction. With RAW you can get closer to the D50 perhaps but nobody in the thread so far has said it is better.

There are many digital camera review sites. Two of the best review site is www.dpreview.com & http://www.steves-digicams.com/ Check them out.
By the way, Pentax made a few successors after Pentax *ist DSLR (since that camera was released more than a year ago).

But the price AR is excellent for this camera

Yes, these sites are excellent but DPReview.com did not review the *ist DL and Steves-Digicams.com only has a user review. The DL is a relatively new model -- newer than the DS (not sure about DS2).

edit: Doh! Looks like I was wrong about the review at Steves-Digicams.com.

Here's a few samples from a Japanese site that's been translated by goole. Anyone that's been using DSLR should know. It's more about the lense then the body. Buying the body is only the beginning. And anyone that is waiting. This rebate was meant to clear out the DL's stock to make way for the newer model (K100D) that's coming out this month.

Yea, I have my A620 camera slated to come on Tuesday next week. :/
This deal is excellent for a budget SLR camera. Hmmm. I guess I can't return the A620 or I will be slapped silly with restocking fees so I saved myself some $.
