It's a good screen, I can notice pentile if I zoom all the way out on the text on a webpage, or put the phone 2-3 inch from my face. Other than that, I rarely notice it.

I can notice jaggies on my gnex at around 6 inches away but i look like a fool using the phone that way.
I wonder if people who are clamoring for 1080p or such at current screen sizes are planning on holding it like this.

Seems to me we've already hit the phone resolution wall.

If the tv hat starts getting popular then ya bring on the 1080p screens, and for the diy'ers you can just duct tape it to your face.

I have the same experience. The screens on the GalaxyS and GalaxyS3 don't bother me at all but I can't stand the Bionic.

Although, now having gotten used to the S3 the S screen seems fuzzy

I have Atrix 4G it works on that. Same pentile as Bionic but 4" instead of 4.3". My friend has a Bionic and dang that thing is ugly I must say.

How close was your face to the screen? I can notice jaggies on my gnex at around 6 inches away but i look like a fool using the phone that way.

Like 16-18" or so. About how far I usually hold it when text messaging.

Dont get me wrong. its not terrible. theres plenty of other reasons to dislike the S3 screen, like its muted color and poor brightness, and a little bit of jaggy text isnt the dealbreaker there. All I can say is that I could definitely tell a difference between the sharpness vs a One X.

Unpossible, at that distance you're unable to distinguish individual pixels on a 300+ dpi display.
Don't take my word on it, apple said it.

Just go to an AT&T store and hold a One X and a S3 side-by-side. Then you'll see it.

It's not that visible on the S3, as it's a more refined panel. You need to go back to the Galaxy Nexus or original Galaxy S to really see it.

It's still easily seen side by side with a One X. Not as visible doesn't mean it's not there. I wouldn't take one of those phones if it was given to me. A shame the One X doesn't have an SD Slot, because outside of that it's one of the best phones I've ever owned.

I can see it on my Gnex, but only for a brief second because it hurts my eyes to try and focus on something that's < 6" from my head.

Only thing I notice is the screen door effect with the Gnex. I don't know if that's the Pentile or what, but I've gotten used to it and it's not really annoying anymore.

Has the phrase 'pentile dysfunction' been coined yet? Because some of you suffer from it.

Exactly.

These people are just looking for a reason to criticize Phone X or praise Phone Y. If it wasn't the pentile screen it would be something else.

When I had a Galaxy Nexus for a bit I loved the screen, and was happy, but the moire effects and other problems are definitely visible to me. I would have been happy with it though if only the antenna worked well where I live.

Lucky for me on sprint I was able to get the Evo 4G LTE which has the beauty of the One X screen plus an MicroSD slot, just need some AOSP roms.

bingo, you can't avoid the screen door effect on a pentile screen. Like I said, those who "don't see it" probably shouldn't look for it at this point. They are better off "seeing nothing".

However, I think it's unnecessary to try to argue anyone who can clearly see a difference between S-LCD and Super Amoled HD. For a phone, I even prefer Super Amoled + over Super Amoled HD.

well that's a great argument! No one can possibly argue against denial.

If it was impossible to avoid the "screen door effect" almost everyone would be saying they can notice it on phones like the SGS3.

Clearly some people don't notice.. and many wouldn't know it was pentile unless they read it on a spec list.

So, yes, your original assertion was wrong.

Count me as a person who can see it when I am looking for it, but doesn't bother me one bit. Text on my Razr Maxx looks great, movies it can't be seen. Sure I can make it out at texting distance if I was trying to, but really unless I am holding it like 4" from my eyes, its not a very apparent issue. Perhaps with a Bionic or older Pentile at a low resolution and PPI, it might have looked horrible.

True its sad that you have to possibly compromise on screen quality when picking out a phone, but the world is full of little compromises people have to make. This isn't VHS Bluray, its not even VHS to DVD or DVD to Blu-ray, its more like the difference in 1080p30 to 1080I60. A difference can be found, but god damn to you have to search hard to find it.

If you know what you are looking for pentile is easy to see, even at 720p.

Yes, if you stare at the screen at a distance less than 12" and focus your eyes and attempt to look for it, you can see it. At a greater than 12" there is absolutely no pentile effect at all.

I think that it's less apparant on the new Galaxy Nexus. Back when Samsung starting using a pentile display on their handset, I didn't know what I was looking at. It was so grainy and I just thought that was just an Android thing. Of course when I brought it up to my friends back then they got all angry because they thought I was just being an Apple fanboy.
