My only question is, whats the point?

They say it helps with the cost issue of switching from P4 to Athlon 64, but with how inexpensive that is these days, I don't see how this actually helps it. Then again, I don't see how having both an AGP slot and a PCI-e x16 slot on a board really does much either (even though it makes more sense to me than both a 775 socket and 939 socket).

I think they should've made it with a 478 socket, as that would make more sense to me. If you had an older P4 system then you could upgrade to Athlon 64 at some point.

Also, is that two x16 PCI-e slots I see? Curious as to what that means.

If u look at the mother board, u will see that the special slot for the add in card sits inbetween the two pci-e slots. this is importants, beacuse basically, the top pci-e slot is wired to the p4 northbridge, the secound pci-e slot is wired to the add in card slot, as the k8 northbridge on the add in card will control that pci-e slot. hence the 2 slots.

Wasn't there another motherbaord like this before, just a generation in the past?

Tyan used to have a motherboard that could run a Socket Athlon or a Slot Athlon.

I've never heard of one that could run either Intel or AMD though.

Maybe the best thing to come from this is the upgrading possibilities.

I mean, the northbridge for the Athlon 64 is soldered on the add-in card. The little PCI-e looking slot makes a direct connection with the southbridge for all the perhiphials and then the NB makes a connection to the extra 16x slot.

So, when Intel ditches LGA775, can ECS just release an add-in card for the new bus/socket?

What about a Pentium-M card? Or a 940 card?

Not that this is anything really new to us folks who have been around the fire for a while. I'm sure all us old folks remeber the old PCI/ISA cards that were basically computers on a card with everything they needed.

This looks like it's done right though. The only thing I want to wonder is, why doesn't ECS just release the motherboard with no onboard socket, and just supply the add-in card for both 775 and 939. They could even include a 478 and 754 card as well, or make the optional to buy from the online store.

anyways...

Quite interesting concept, although I'm sure that buying of those things would be nearly as costly as buying another cheap motherboard and I think the benefits of having an entirely new motherboard outweigh that of the addin card. One of the main reasons is the weight of the heatsink is distributed better across the motherboard than with an addin slot. If you want a copper cooler, you may be out of luck because it might weigh too much for that board and the bus slot for that matter to support.

socket7/supersocket7 ring any bells? There are boards that let you start with a sktA and go to skt754 or 939 and from skt754 to 939. This board seems rather extraneous.

Ah yes, that's the one I was thinking of. But I was thinking of the intel Socket 423/478....
