I am looking at getting a new dell laptop. There are the new M processers, and I'm not sure whether I'd get any benefit from it.
I am looking for the most powerful laptop for my $. I don't care about battery life, since it's always plugged in. I just need it to go to a clients site, so I can't get a desktop.
I need a big screen so I was thinking of the wuxga(I think that's what it was).
Does anyone have any ideas whether I need p4 or is there any benefit for me to get the M version?
Thanks

The P-M performs great in non-P4 optimized apps (1.6 between 2.4 and 2.66 Desktop P4), but in P4 optimized apps it falls short (remember its P6 architechure). The fastest Mobile P4 is a 2.5GHz so it could be pretty close. What apps will be run on it? I'd be tempted to go P-M just in case Mobility comes into play because if you look at Anandtech's review of the P-M, the P-M really was between a 2.4 and a 2.66 desktop P4 which would put it essentially right on with a 2.5Ghz Mobile P4. Both (Mobile P4 and P-M) can be outfitted with GF4 4200 Go and WUXGA screens.

So would that really help me? I don't really need power savings. I just need speed for apps/programming tools/web server apps. I already have wireless cards.

Thanks!

Pentium-M is still the same processor as Centrino just without the integrated wireless chipset right?

yes

to be called a Centrino laptop, it must have:

a Pentium-M processor
a member of the Intel 855 chipset family
and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN 3B MiniPCI Adapter

If you don't care about battery life, don't spend extra for a Pentium-M or a P4-M, just get one with a desktop CPU.

if you just use it to write code then i don't think you'll need a 32meg gfx card
