Does anyone remember how this "box" opens? I want to put some thermal grease on the cpu of an intel pentium 500 slot 1 i think. I removed the box off the mainboard but cannot find a way to open it.

That is written on the "box". The chip lies on a small board, and it is like a very large memory stick. Fits into a slot, not a socket. It's a 1998 model, but still runs for internet use.

The article explains it in detail. Thank you. It is still a difficult procedure, but after ten years it is good to put some thermal grease on the chip.

I think it is an early Pentium III. I will run an Intel id program after i start it. It's my brothers' and it runned at 666 (133 instead of 100) for many years.

After 8 years of not touching a computer, 2 months ago i started my system.
It is old, my third and three quarters computer, and i am not planning to buy another one for the next five years. It is not overclocked, but managed an extra 50 MHz with a program, the program though seemed stuck for a while and i do not really care about overclocking any more.
Athlon @ 1400MHz
and its memory is 784 sdram to be updated to 1ghz ddram

I runned a duron 700 at 933 without serious issues and then i bought the athlon and then another mainboard. Now i'm just going to get the memory and a new monitor.

Wow, talk about "classic" computing. If you lived near me, I'd hook you up with some better systems for free. I've been giving away all my single-core machines.

I'm not working in this field. But i started with a 386. And computers (and parts) are expensive here. I just use it for internet and maybe set up a home video surround system. I just need the hard disk space for this. I had two computers linked together, but i could only use one!

Wow.. the slot 1 katmai p3 500mhz.. brings back some memories. First computer i bought with my own money.

What field and area do your work in? you must live in a very remote area in order for computer parts to be SO expensive that you're still using that.

My slowest computer now is a 1ghz p3 laptop and its so slow for internet. just basic script and flash bogs it down so bad. I can't imagine mordern internet on a 500mhz p3

Currently unemployed, and living in Cyprus, an island in the med.

I may install 98 if i start a celeron 300 for a second computer. And when you install newer programs it is like having a newer os. I may also install linux on it. The PIII is not mine but i will have it here for a while and see its net capabilities. Only for browsing and downloading. No netcams here.

I actually tried to install redhat7 from original discs and they just did not want to install.

The P3-500 wasn't quite bottom of the range. I was given a P3-450 system for my 21st Birthday, some 11 years ago, and a very nice machine it was at the time. It's responsible for one of my fondest PC related memories - the day I switched from Windows 98 to Windows 2000.

Once Windows 2k was installed, suddenly I could multitask for more than an hour without programs crashing, without resources dwindling to nothing, and I had system uptimes approaching a whole month =D

Yep the 450Mhz was the first PIII. Mine is still sitting over there in the corner, but the hardware has outlived it's usefulness. I was considering turning it into a budget NAS but it's a bit anemic for even that.

If you factor the power costs into the equation using an old machine like that just doesn't make sense. it is almost always cheaper to get the lowest of the lowest current budget hardware and use that.

I may put 98 on the celeron. Overclock it to it's limit. See if i can browse/download. I will consider the costs of getting it up and running. I do not think that it can run a camera on it though.

The PIII has an o/s on it (WinXP i think), and will be used as an office computer. More than capable of doing that.
And some news. I did not opened the cpu case, i was afraid of breaking the plastic studs. I removed the fan cover and cleaned it though.
The only isa hardware i will be using is a sound blaster (there is no sound on board). Because i removed a good sound blaster off the PIII and installed it in mine.

don't install 98 man; there hasn't been any kind of updates for it in years, and iirc a lot of up-to-date security software simply won't run on it. so basically running win 98 on a computer that's connected to the internet is like intentionally dropping the soap in a prison shower. i'd definitely say install some form of linux.

ps that's badass that you live in cyprus man!

Also, 98 sucked, where XP didn't, and still has updates to 2014. If looking at Linux, IMO, start with PCLOS w/ LXDE, or an Ubuntu derivative for low-end PCs. 1GB RAM is enough to not need trimmed down distro, but I'm not sure if a full blown KDE or Gnome would take well to that old of a CPU (if you end up liking Qt apps, choice of Qt theme can make a huge performance difference, too).
