Pentium D 805 overheating?

Hi everyone, I am building an intel system for a friend. I purchased the cpu and mobo combo from Fry's. Cpu is Pentium D 805 and the mobo is ECS P4M800PRO-M V2. At idle, I am getting a cpu temperature reading of 54 degree C. Does that look normal? I didn't change anything in the BIOS, and I am using the stock Intel HSF. Thanks.

All the Smithfield Pentium Ds (i.e. all the ones with an 8xx numerical designation) run a little hot. Some are hotter than others, and the 805s are all a crapshoot. Some of them behave like 840EE chips and some of them act more like 820s. Your friend seems to have gotten one of the bad ones. 54C might not be "normal", but it's within the chips wide standard deviation. If it bothers your friend, he should get an aftermarket HSF to help cool that thing down.

A Thermaltake Big Typhoon keeps my well-overclocked Pentium D 805 at frigid temps and quiet, all while running various DC projects 24/7. A worthy investment if the case can take it.

That, and it's on a "crap" ECS RC410L/800-M mobo. Amazing..

If thats idle at stock speeds, even for the stock heatsink thats a bit high. Mine ran at 57c load, overclocked to 3.7ghz with a scythe ninja. THe stock heatsink does suck though, might want to make sure its fully seated, those retarded plastic clicks can pop out sometimes.

That is idle at stock speed, nothing had being changed.

Then you should indeed recheck the heatsink. That doesn't seen right at all...

System runs, haven't check temp for awhile, but it is running.
