Darn.. stop posting P-D 805 deals! I am soooo tempted to take them and sell my X2 3800+. Money from sale of X2 3800+ = 805 + Mobo + few bucks in pocket.. Getting harder and harder to resist.. Only if there was a mobo that guarantees to support Conroe, I'd just jump back to Intel..

Well, 1. I live in school dorm, so I don't pay it by myself . 2. If I remember right, it's like 100W more, both under heavy load. Assuming it's full-load 24/7 for a month, it's 72kWh add for the power bill. In my area, it's $ 0.07366 per kWh, so it's $ 5.30 more a month. Thus, $ 63.64 a year. Hmm.. I don't think it's much big deal, considering most of time it's under idle, or even turned off.

Why would you ditch the x2 3800+ for that Crappy cpu?

Cuz it's damn cheap. It justifies all the facts how crappy Pen-D is. And moreover, it's not that crap as you think if you look at it without bias.

lol. Yes, I keep thinking that, because I used 820 @ 3.5GHz before I buy X2 3800+ I'm currently using @ 2.7GHz. No doubt absolute performance of X2 is way better than P-D. But when it comes to performance/cost, you should think twice~ Isn't it amazing that Intel's has better cost-effctive than AMD? I never thought I'd say such thing in my life.

Not only can you compute, you can also turn down the home thermostat! Just kidding, think these could be used in a fanless situation as a media center CPU, like with a Ninja Scythe or that Turning Tower thing?

I doubt that.. Even X2 is kinda hard to be cooled passively. Silent PC Review Even the northwood 2.8A (Which uses less power than X2 I believe) they used to test was hitting 70 degrees without fan. Thus, I strongly doubt the power devourer Smithfield can be handled passively.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Intel CPUs. Sure the enthusiast community definately favors AMD, but for a cheap dual core chip, there is nothing wrong with this one.

That's my point. I know Intel predicted the market wrong, especially they didn't expect K8 to be this good and success, and introduced Pentium D quick. I know the old-style FSB limits the potential, I know Intel had been too long without much of rivalry, and I know many enthusiast (including myself) doesn't like Intel. That's why I sold my 820 and came to X2. But 805 is just too cheap. Cheap enough to ignore all the factors about how Intel sux.

i looked at prices for mobo+cpu setup and it looks like you can put something together with this cpu and a cheap mobo for $200.

could you buy more power for $200 going AMD? thanx

Loaded question as AMD doesn't make a dual core CPU **slow** enough to compete at the level this Pentium D is at, performance and/or price wise. YES, this is a good price for a dual core CPU, but I would put a bullet in my head before selling off a dual core AMD CPU for one of these. Counter-intuitive.

How would a low end dualcore (like this pentium 805) compare to a AMD 64 3800+ on multitasking? Of course, this is assumed stock settings.

Good chip at a great price

Its not as fast as an X2 but its also almost a third of the price and if they oc as well as the one I have seen it should be quite nice

For this price you can get a chip, board and memory for the price of a X2 chip

I think it's a pretty good deal for someone who HAS to have dual core but doesn't want to pay the extra $$$ for an x2.

Personally I don't need dual core - I'd just as soon buy a socket 754 Sempron for some budget overclocking madness! Currently have one Sempron running 2.75GHz.

I think the 805 will probably be faster or at least equal in terms of raw multitasking power. However I think the 805 will feel a lot smoother and things will be "snappier" although it might lose in outright speed.

I've used both K8s and Prescotts and I still think that Intels feel faster, even with HT turned off..I don't know why though. Perhaps I'm just an Intel fanboi...
