Pentium D just quit?

One of my machines that didn't get much use lately, was a Pentium D 3.0 on an Asus P5B. I know the D was a limited processor but the machine was very reliable until it was shut down Friday night.

Now it won't boot/start/post at all. No drives or fans come on. Replacing the PSU with two different brands didn't help. LED on the motherboard comes on but that's it.

I did reseat the processor and even pulled the motherboard out of it's case & set it on cardboard. Nothing helps so far.

So before I go buy a newer faster processor & board what else can I do to sort this out? Obviously any chip I get these days will run better than the Pentium D - but I would love to fix this system rather than create a new build.

Thanks for any suggestions.

tried clearing the cmos?

OK I just did that and same thing happens - nothing! I was thinking about clearing the CMOS last night when I found it was dead, but I didn't figure that would fix the non-power up situation.

All that happens is that the CPU fan starts to spin....gets about a quarter of a turn and stops. None of the other case fans even do that, and none of the drives power up either.

Most likely fried board than anything.

Bad memory/controller/slot will also exhibit the same issue. I have had instances when boards started to do that and I took out one of the modules from the dual channel pair and it worked. No other combination of memory or pairs of memory would restart it.

Same issue- minor proc fan spin then nothing.

Sounds like you have a short shutting the power supply down immediately; have you tried booting with a minimal config? Even try without the CPU and see if the fan at least continues to spin. CPU is the most likely thing to draw that much current since you already have it out of the case.

I've pulled the board completely out of the case and taken all the cards and RAM out of it. Still nothing.

Might be out of luck then.

Coincidentally I've had the same problem twice, and in both cases it was an external USB header causing the problem - unplugging it fixed everything. Must have been a 5V short I guess as nothing was plugged in.

But did you try without the CPU? That will at least tell you if it's the CPU or the board. I think boards die more frequently than CPUs but they usually don't cause a direct short like it sounds like you have.

Ive had that twice, once it was from a bad RAM slot, and the other was from going into sleep mode while overclocking. I couldn't believe the OS could interfere with something as basic as POST.

I just replaced the board and chip. I went with an i3 processor and Intel board. Not overclockable but I need that computer to be reliable. And I didn't have to reinstall all of my software!

It booted into Windows, and I went in to the Device Manager & deleted all the items with asterisks. Then I ran the CD that came with the Intel board & I installed the drivers.

It runs fine now! I'll keep that Pentium D processor for future projects...and the RAM from that motherboard too. I am going to toss the old Asus P5B board though ....

What possibly can be the problem is your HSF heatsink fins are covered in dust, thus not giving any cooling to CPU. Take it outside and blow out all the dust make it nice and shiny then try her. Also try to check CPU temps in BIOS , if you can clean up the heatsink fan you can go there check our your temp.

My dads Pentiun D 3Ghz same thing happened. Turns out idle temps were 80c and going up to 100c, it ran well for 4 years, turns out it was the dust on the fins of your cooler... after taking outside and cleaning it with air compressor it worked like a charm.
BTW These chips are designed not to work or to shutdown if you reach certain tamp,, gl
