Pentium D replacement

I recently salvaged an old computer of mine and gave it to my sons to do some light gaming. Added a gt440 ddr3 and an old samsung 17 in 1280 x 1024 screen. They play some source engine stuff including tf2 and they both play wow on a private server that runs vanilla only. The pc is running a pd 820 smithfield at stock 2.8 ghz speed. According to the chipset info on intel's site it can only support c2d up to E6700 bus speed no higher than 1066. TF2 is really chugging in this set up. PD is a garbage proc. I can get a 6700 for about 75$ would it be worth it? Not planning on upgrading the video further as that would require a new psu.

I would look at an E5200, if its a custom built computer. If not then go as high end as you can, since OC is out of the question.

My dads rig before he upgraded recently was a Pentium D 3Ghz 2 core. My Athlon Xp 2500+ was faster... Your world will change once you get new processor. gl

what is the E5200? I thought C2D went from E4 series to 6? According to intels site the chipset doesnt support E5 anything. Here is the list http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/8765

It most likely won't an e5200 is a 45nm part vs e6700 65nm part. A lot of the older 775 motherboards only supported 65nm parts.

I can't overclock (gateway mobo) and I can't imagine the 2140 would be much of an upgrade at stock speeds. I also can't view for sale forum for some reason.

I honestly don't know how reliable buying stuff on ebay is, but I see Core 2 Duo E6400 and E6600 CPUs for $40-50 plus shipping (about $5) from top-rated sellers.

No idea if that's a good deal or not, though.

My friend is still running one of those, and he plays the shit out of TF2 and all of Valve's stuff.
