Since there is no "centrino cpu" I am assuming you are talking about a Pentium M. Pentium M's have 478 pins but are mechanically and electrically incompatible with Desktop S478 boards. In order to run one in a desktop situation you can either buy a S479 board or buy an ASUS adapter that allows you to run them on certain Asus motherboards.

Yep, Donut is right, you can't use one on a socket 478 desktop board, unless you get an Asus board compatible with the CT-479 adaptor. I have one running on a P4P800-VM using the CT-479 adaptor. It's a 1.6, and runs at 2.4ghz on stock voltage with the dinky heatsink that comes with the CT-479 adaptor.

Yes, but only on certain Asus boards with latest BIOS.

There are socket 479 desktop motherboards, DFI and AOpen both have one. AOpen's MiniPC barebones PC even takes a Pentium M CPU. The motherboards are a bit pricier than normal motherboard though.

I'm running my Dothan (Pentium M 1.5GHz 400MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache) with an Asus CT-479 Socket Adapter on a Asus P4P800-VM. Yes, you do need a certain BIOS revision. Tweaks? You can do the 400MHz to 533MHz FSB pin mod. I've actually done this on my setup. Overclocks it from 1.5GHz to 2.0GHz.

They are available. Price is kinda high, but the cheapest one isn't much more than an Asus board with CT479. Some manufacturers were showcasing boards at CES 2006. That link has two pics of some MiniITX AOpen boards and some AOpen SFF stuff, plus HTPC and what looks to be a full ATX sized Crossfire capable board. Asus has a mATX board, the N4L-VM DH.

OK, this does sound a bit counter intuitive. I like the Shuttle SD11G5.

(good starter for HTPC) and in the specs it says the only supported CPU type is the 479 pin Pentium M. Will my newly purchased Banias 1.5Ghz 1M L2 400SB Socket 478 work in this unit?

Yes it will in theory, though you want to check their support documentation to make sure it supports your older CPU. In fact, if the BIOS is willing you may be able to get a bit more out of that CPU. The Banias was released up to 1.7GHz. Not as good as Dothan, but nevertheless a solid CPU.
