I just got a 700m and when i use windows to check the speed, it shows it at 221mhz when its on battery. I thought the speed should never drop below 600mhz no matter what. Does windows just not detect the speed properly? I'm using WinXP SP2 btw.

That's Windows screwing up. 600 MHz is the lowest it'll go. It's adaptive based on how much CPU power your programs need. If you do need it to run at full speed all the time go into your power profile and set it to "always on".

don't the newer centrino processors, i.e dothan sonoma, have a gadget with initials something along the lines of odcs (on demand clock switching) (think thats wrong but near what i mean, which causes the proccessor to divide its clock speed, so its running at the 600 mhz on the clock but then divides that, i had a programme, where you could control it, right markxp or something, i have literaly just deleted it as it murdered my battery, you could also change the voltage, which i did but then the computer would crash, will come back to this after some more research. spot the spelling mistakes as well!!!

update, found a link

linky link

its on demand clock modulation, and you can set it to 100% - 82.5 75 etc, so that could explain your 221 mhz which is just under 37.5 % at 600 mhz,
hope my ramble helps

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's correct. The only time the computer should be running under 600 MHz is if you have the power profile set to maximum battery life, which puts the processor into "degrade" mode. I've run CPU-ID when Windows says I'm at 221 MHz, and I'm still really at 600 MHz.
