Pentium M Upgrade

I have an Compaq/HP Presario X1018 notebook that currently has a 1.4GHz Pentium M (Banias) processor, and was looking to upgrade. The newest series of Pentium M CPU's are based on the 90nm Dothan core, these have a much larger cache as well as higher core speeds with the same 400MHz FSB. I'm trying to determine if the Dothan's are 'Drop-in' compatible with the older Banias, in particular I'm looking at the "Pentium M Dothan Model 745", for a Socket 478. Any help in determining if this new chip will work in my computer would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can. Might be different voltage, and may need a bios update to recognize newer processors if available at all. You can probably drop in the highest clocked banias without issue, but I think laptops are more sensitive to core changes than desktops.

Question. was your laptop offered with the 2MB cache Pentium M when it was ordered?

keysplayr: No the Dothan CPU weren't out back then, and HP doesn't offer it as an upgrade now, I'm just hoping to find a work-around.

I've heard of people dropping in Dothans into old Toshiba laptops...and the Dothans operated at 300mhz, but apparently there's a fix for that. I never bothered to check what it is though. May be the same for your notebook, check like www.notebookforums.com or something.(not sure if that is an actual website)

It should do, but it will need BIOS support from the laptop.
