I'm a gamer, websurfer, and emailer. Given this, which processor do you think would be better. A pentium m centrino, or a pentium 4. Pentium 4 3.0 ghz versus a intel centrino 1.6 ghz. Oh and just for the fun of it i'll throw in a Amd athlon - 64 3000+ mobile cpu. Any ideas, can someone give me their opinon on how these processors stack up. Which do you think is better for my purposes. I'm sort of an intel fan but i'm aware that amd is a better processor at the moment. Is this true for laptops as well?

For the laptop, go with the Dothan's. Impressive performance per clock as well as low, low power input/output. On a laptop, lower power requirements == teh win.

There's a good article on this somewhere out there, but I don't feel like looking for it.

I don't know about how well the A64 mobiles are, but if its between the Pentium M and Pentium 4, definately go with the Pentium M. It uses much less power, and in many cases is faster than a pentium 4 of similar price meaning a Pentium M @ 1.6 could probably beat a P4 @3.0 in many applications.

Centrino, no question. My Pentium-M 1.3 is only about 10-20% slower than my desktop P4 2.8C, when I do scripting or interactive stuff or compilation.

Other things fall off the edge and the P-M sucks, e.g. running bzip2 straight, (probably memory bandwidth issue).

And that's only performance, the Centrino architeture is much better for a notebook in various aspects.

centrino is a name and not an archecture. The only thing that makes it better than a typical P4 is that it has a superior processor for laptop use.

I would recommend either a P-m or the althon, athlon=slightly faster, pm = longer battery life.

If i remmber right the athlons are 35 watt and p-m is 21 watt power usage.

Well i've narrowed it down now. I'm basically trying to decide whether I should go with the pentium m or an amd. I've seen lots of mixed reviews either way so i'm having a hard time coming to a conclusion. i'm starting to lean towards the pentium m because it has a lot of really impressive benchmarks. does anyone have any additional insight that might help me make a decision.

P-M still pwns everything in Mobile. A64 is great but it is really just a desktop chip that can run at different voltages and with a couple of temperature enhancements.

I would go P-M.

If you think you'd ever have to rely on battery power, get the Pentium M. Those are available up to 2+GHz these days, so you wouldn't be giving up much performance. Heck, there's been a spate of articles lately reviewing the Pentium M CPU with one of those DFI or AOpen mATX motherboards and for most things the Pentium M can hold it's own.

Laptops with Pentinum M usually lighter and have longer battery life. I think even those heavy 9 lbs gaming laptops started to use Pentinum M instead of P4.

Athlon 64 Mobile is rare and unheard of. I haven't seen one around except the one offer from HP.

I got my HP NW8000, its got P -M 2Ghz 1GB RAM and Fire GL 128mb video and I swear it is noticably faster than my desktop 3ghz 1GB RAM AIW 9800 128mb Pro. Havent really tried to see how long it can go on battery but it has lasted 90mins with no issue set at full power so the processor doesnt slow down, hehe.

EDIT: Judging by playing Doom3 in high quality at 1280x1024 on both

Get 18.4fps on timedemo on the laptop, which I know isnt like great but the quality looks good and is very playable.

I was able to watch, Windows Media HD, the upcoming codec from Windows, withoutr any problems in my Centrino Pentium M-1,6GHz laptop.
However, I could not watch the same file without freezes with my Pentium 4 1.6 GHz desktop before, even though I had 64MB Nvidia video card .

Go figure it out...
Pentium M is far superior to Pentium 4....
If you want to play fast games, get dedicated memory though.....
