Please tell me what the major advantage is for the Pentium M. Is it just that it has more of a battery life? My understanding between the Pentium M and Pentium 4 M is that the Pentium M has longer battery life when not plugged in and that the Pentium 4 M does not have that long a bettery life when not plugged in, also both of them save some battery power by not usuing all of their functions when not necassary, they both run cooler and with less watts being used. What is the conversion to compare, say a 1.86ghz Pentium M to a Pentium 4 M? Please help me. Thank you.

Please follow the forum rules. Use the edit button for your previous thread. Thanks. If you're reffering to laptop then go for P4 M at all cost, it'll give you much better value for the chip. I don't know the conversion in order to compare, but you can get some benchmark scores. Just google P4 M Benchmarks. Hope I helped a bit.

Answered in the other thread.

Short answer, you want the newer Pentium M in a laptop, not the older Pentium 4M.

PM runs much cooler, gives much better battery life, and depending on what you do, it's faster than a P4. In many things a 1.6-1.8ghz Dothan based P-M is faster than a 3.2ghz Pentium 4. The pentium-m is a differant architecture than the P4, and is more similar to an A64 than a P4.

PM have seroius weaknesses and can't keep up with desktop A64 in very critical apps. It was designed to be a laptop cpu with not enough power to compete in the desktop market.

We are comparing PM to P4M, so I am not sure how a desktop A64 got in here.

PM wins over the P4M hands down, imo.

Dothan over Prescott for a laptop, any day of the week.

Hyperthreading is nice if you work in the foreground and something munches in the background.

Some high-throughput applications don't play nice with the P-Ms limited bandwidth.

Other than that, go Pentium-M.
