people actually buy (old/used) sports games?

So I was making my rounds at various Gamestop stores (hey with pro membership and buy one get one free deals and such, finding used JRPGs on older systems can be cheaper than Ebay many times)...

And I saw these people specifically seeking out and buying sports games.

Just wierd to me because in the retro/collector scene sports games are the most worthless trash there is. Nobody EVER buys them. When you go to a yard sale or flea market and someone has stacks of sports and racing games, it means someone beat you there and picked through and got the good games. Even the holy SNES, its acceptable to build urinals out of the millions of sports title carts that would otherwise polute and contaminate a landfill.

They are literally worthless, people like me dont want them even when they are free.

So it was kinda sureal seeing actual people specifically seeking out and paying money for sports games.

Well, if you dont like sport games then its your taste which i cant arrgue with ...

for me ITS A BLAST to play Fifa or Tennis with 4 players or 6 ( Friends ) , and few bottles of beer...
I use my Xbox only for sport games, we play until 5AM sometimes...

So, yes people buy sport games.

Its not even whether you like sports games or not, they seem to be universally worthless. They always exclusively dominate the dollar bin.

Do they just make 10x more sports games than other genres? If they are really that hot and people buy them why dont they hold any value at all?

Only sports game I have that has ANY value is Tecmo Bowl for NES.

Its one of the biggest pet peeves of any collector, digging through 500 copies of Madden to look for Mario or something.

Were these people buying year old sports games? Cuz that would make them pretty darn smart by your definition, buying $5 dollar games to enjoy.

If you want free games, I can't think of anything better to be into than sports games.

I think you should amend your title/post to "People actually buy old sports games?"

Sports games probably "hold their value" the least of any major genre. Why? Because within a year, the previous year has almost always (not always, but close) been eclipsed. Another 2-3 years, and it's so thoroughly outclassed in almost every way by the latest iteration, it makes the old game's value next to nil.

That, and sports specific issues like out of date rosters, teams, features, rules, etc, mean it's worth it to usually pay a few extra dollars for the latest "used" entry.

That being said, sports games can and are excellent. Let's not turn this into another "piss on it because it's popular" jerk fest. If you enjoy the real-life sport, or the league, there's countless hours of fun to be had. Tell a basketball fan NBA 2K13 is not a phenomenal basketball game, they'll laugh in your face. I've spent countless hours on it; yes, far more than any JRPG I've ever played. I'm in year 4 of my Utah Jazz franchise, won the title last year. Dealing with free agents, contracts, college prospects, team chemistry, egos, etc and crafting the very best team possible is a game within a game...and then of course there's the action on the floor.

So yes, sports games are popular because they allow you to recreate the sports and the leagues people enjoy. But by their very nature of yearly releases, they hold their value extremely poorly. They are bad collector's items, for the most part.

This says nothing of their quality or inherent fun factor. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool, troll, or both.

sports games drop in value quick because a year later, the rosters are outdated. people who play sports games typically watch the same sport in real life and want the game to be up to date with real life. that is why you see madden XXXX-1 drop to like $5 in august.

people who are playing the nba games don't want to be playing with lebron on the cavs, they want him on the heat.

Not trying to knock or complain here, was just shocking since my usual experience is watching people walk away in disgust after sifting through a crate of the same sports games that have been sitting there for months.

Resellers booths at fleamarkets are entertaining, they will have a billion sports games for less than $1 but any Mario game will be like $45 even when they are 10-15 eBay games at best.

I guess I am part of the problem, because I do enjoy sports games. I am a big sports fan, so I look forward to the update every year. Like Sulaco said, I enjoy building my teams up from the ground (they all suck in real life) and turn them into champions.

Not a problem at all, better someone buy them than they end up in a landfill.

I don't mind older sports games as I don't play them often and don't care about out of date rosters and whatnot.
Some of the non 'yearly' sports games are quite fun, like the older SSX: Tricky.

Some people may have liked the way those games felt or played at the time, and lost their copy.

I still play Madden 07 on my pc, to this day... lol. Last madden I bought was 2010, and I like 07 better. I'm feeling the same way with nba 2k13. Don't know why I bought it. They changed too many things. I like the nba 2k11 felt and played.

My opinion - Best football game ever made was NFK 2k for the Sega Dreamcast. I still have both and I'm sure there are people who would offer to buy it from me.

I'd love to play sports games, but I refuse to pay $60 for a game that comes out every year. I am the type that waits for games to go on sale before I buy them. Problem is, by the time most sports games are what I'm willing to pay ($35 or less), the rosters are outdated or they're no longer supported. Therefore I don't play sports games, sucks.

I buy old/used sports games. I will wait til it's about 2 years old before buying it for like $5 or less. I love $1 sports games. There is no better bang for buck. I don't care about current rosters.

I don't see the appeal of paying $60+ for old JPN rpg games. I enjoyed them as a kid but I just outgrew the repetition and genre. When I'm in the mood, I rather fire the rpg on a handheld via emulator rather than the old console itself. I still have most of the popular rpg games in cartridge and discs.

Probably the oldest football game I own is Front Page Sports Football for PC.

I like various old sports games. Simpler and more basic without the BS. I like to just get to the damn game itself, onto the field without all the glitter, stats, crappy music and more options for game types than there is gameplay. Especially the arcadey ones, like Baseball Stars on Neo Geo, or Pigskin, love those.

Still have mine too. Liked 2k back then, havn't played it in years, can't remember why i liked it to be honest. I still have about 30 or so DC games and system in original box.

Well it's not for sale. But you'll still need a Dreamcast to play it. The page you linked shows one for $499.00

And they will never in hell get that. I could ask $1,000 for my Dreamcast, doesn't mean that's the value, or that anyone will pay that.
The page I linked also shows a brand new Dreamcast going for $120. Most used in good condition go for around $40-$60:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...condition=used

I and still have my launch Dreamcast, box, and manuals in perfect shape. But they are not rare or valuable really in the least.

I liked it because the game had real physics in it. You actually got tackled in that game. No more of this get close to the player and get an instant tackle like all Madden games. The game just had a right feel about it.
Just imagine how much better football games would be if 2K still gave EA some competition. But EA got scared the year 2K released their game for $25. So EA bought the NFL exclusive license. And that's all EA works on each year the "glitter". Like you, I don't give a rats ass about glitter. I want a game that feels right.

I still have my launch Dreamcast as well. I don't see anyone paying $499 for it either. I'm the type that buys a system/game and never sells it. I keep them around in case I get the itch to do some old school gaming.

There are old sports games I still play today. RBI baseball on the NES is still fun today as when I played as a kid. Same with Super Tennis on the SNES. Coach K basketball for the Genesis hasn't aged as well but it's still pretty fun. And I regularly fire up College Hoops 2k8 on my ps3. That is still the greatest college basketball game.
