I'd rather drink horse semen than play any of them, but I understand it's primarily because of the roster changes, so even a year later the game is worthless.

There are old sports games I still play today. RBI baseball on the NES is still fun today as when I played as a kid. Same with Super Tennis on the SNES. Coach K basketball for the Genesis hasn't aged as well but it's still pretty fun. And I regularly fire up College Hoops 2k8 on my ps3. That is still the greatest college basketball game.

super tennis is amazing. that game still owns. matt is my guy in that game.

I like Hiro. I wonder if OP ever played Mario Tennis or Golf on the GBA. Since he likes JPN RPG, he will probably like both games. Camelot developed both games before they did the Hot Shot Golf series. I bought the Hot Shot Golf and Hot Shot Tennis double pack for the PSP and it's probably my favorite PSP game. There are other sports games other than Madden and EA sports.

I don't want to get flamed for saying this, but I think sports games with yearly rosters are one of the few types of console games that would probably be better as free-to-play or something or monthly charge that's super cheap.

I wonder how many Football fanatics really care about updated stats, though i agree just make a DLC for that stuff.
I'd like to see some attention to detail...cheerleaders, Refs, coaches cussing as they walk back n forth, models of fans in the stands and not blurry boxes...maybe a fight break out...remember the mini game fights in TV Sports hocky? Maybe get tackled and rammed into people on the side lines, real risks for players getting injured...etc
They could do that stuff without making it Arcadey, it would certainly pose far mroe realism than the way Madden is now.

Madden and NCAA Football have far too many real issues with actually creating a simulation of football to worry about stuff like that anytime soon. Broken AI, gameplay exploits, and bugs. 13 was a step in the right direction, but there's a ways to go.
NCAA Football added cheerleaders a couple years ago. And it's stale and repetitive after about the 9th or 10th time of seeing them. Doing the same things. Over and over. By about time number 100, you just want to pull your eyes out.

What's sad is that NFL2K5, a game now 9 years old, on a previous generation system, which was retailed for $20 new, from a company FAR smaller than EA, has easily 10x better presentation quality than current Madden's. It's laughable, but it just proves what a total lack of competition breeds.

Take Two isn't THAT much smaller than EA. Let's not forget that they are the publishers of a little series called Grand Theft Auto.

So?? The point still stands: A 9 year old game on a last gen console sold at a discount from a smaller company with fewer resources still utterly trounces the current offering's efforts in the presentation department.

It's a total joke.

From what I remember they had the ESPN exclusive contract back then. NFL messed it up for us fans by letting EA getting exclusive rights to make NFL games.

EA actually manages to offer worse game play with each generation. This is usually so they can focus on graphics more and more.

Their SNES games were awesome. The best PGA Tour is 2004. People actually started liking the college football better because it focused more on the game than on other nonsense like the NFL did.
which is a nice little allegory for the real sport now that I think about it.

Its not even whether you like sports games or not, they seem to be universally worthless. They always exclusively dominate the dollar bin.

Do they just make 10x more sports games than other genres? If they are really that hot and people buy them why dont they hold any value at all?

Only sports game I have that has ANY value is Tecmo Bowl for NES.

Its one of the biggest pet peeves of any collector, digging through 500 copies of Madden to look for Mario or something.

Sports games which did not have an annual sequal are much more higly valued..

Tecmo bowl
Tecmo super Bowl
RBI baseball
Mike Tysons Punch out

these are the best of the best.

I buy certain snes sports games... I harvest them for reproductions, but that's outside of the scope of this thread.

I mostly buy stuff like madden 95-98, and a few others.

Many people are seeking out sports games for systems like the NES, SNES and Genesis because you can turn them into other games, like unreleased English translated JPRG's. The Reproduction scene is big now for all these systems.

I buy old/used sports games. I will wait til it's about 2 years old before buying it for like $5 or less. I love $1 sports games. There is no better bang for buck. I don't care about current rosters.

I don't see the appeal of paying $60+ for old JPN rpg games. I enjoyed them as a kid but I just outgrew the repetition and genre. When I'm in the mood, I rather fire the rpg on a handheld via emulator rather than the old console itself. I still have most of the popular rpg games in cartridge and discs.

Thats me, meaning what you do... I usually go the under $20 rule. I have a kid (Kid He is 35) here at work. EVERY YEAR...

EVERY Madden, NHL, NBA, Tiger and EVERY show.

Madden, I can go 2 maybe 3 years.
HELL. I am SO far out with Tiger.... SO far Tiger 14 has not dropped last years Tiger much. I am due for a new game.

And still play Madden 10.

60 bucks for rosters and a new juke....... NAH...

You are comparing what is considered the best football of all time to every other football game. That is like comparing every JRPG to Chrono Trigger and crying they couldn't be as good. It was made by Square, why aren't all other Square titles as good?

That's a horrendously awful analogy, and you know it.

First off, we're talking about presentation. As in, mimicking a television broadcast.

The comparison between a sports game and a JRPG? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? A JRPG like Chrono Trigger is endearing because of it's story, characters, and gameplay.

Three things not at all applicable in this analogy.

The far better analogy would be if Chrono Trigger had the best, most life-like cutscenes or in-game graphics, and everything else for years and generations afterward was still trying to catch up. There would be NO excuse for that. That's what we're dealing with.

Presentation is all effort. Pure and simple. Can you fit it on the disk, and how much is it going to cost you? There's no nuanced story-telling, no charismatic once-in-a-life-time character cast, and no gameplay to speak of.

Digital Chris Berman sitting behind a desk giving video highlights of games, and Trey Wingo giving draft updates and injury reports. Yeah. It's practically like the battle with Magus.
There is absolutely no reason EA could not do something along the quality of the presentation seen in NFL2k5. Nothing to do with gameplay, nothing to do with bashing EA. To excuse it is just burying one's head in the sand.

I understand getting old games that someone actually enjoys, even if they're worthless in terms of value. Some of my favorite sports games are old and simple, I liked Joe Montana football on Genesis, NFL Blitz on PS1, NBA Jam, etc.

I bet that modern sports games will soon be murdered by microtransactions if the industry keeps moving in the direction it seems to be following. Online-only even for SP or playing with friends, want to go to the playoffs? Buy the expansion pack for $19.99! Want to update your roster to account for mid-season changes? Buy roster update for $4.99! Want to play in the actual superbowl stadium? $9.99! Hah.

I doubt they would do that. Especially with Madden. They already are adding features they could charge for. NFL.com's fantasy football leagues can be managed in Madden, granted that is the worst of all the fantasy leagues I've used.

People don't buy the new Maddens for the new rosters. People buy it for the new features the game ads. Engine changes and such can't really be patched in.

Yes, certain games are still fun, like NHL 95 (or 94, very popular with collector's), NBA 93, NBA Jam, Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Super Bowl, NHL 2K10, etc. Niche titles, but there's a reason, something about them is just better.

However, most sports games are absolute junk in the back market, no doubt about it.

Note that when NFL 2K5 was relased, Visual Concepts was a studio under Sega... it wasn't till some time later that Sega sold VC to Take 2...

It's probably because they make a new version of every sport game every year. I normally don't buy sports games new OR used for this specific reason. I have 2 sports games and I only play one because the other is outdated.

Speaking of sports games...

Why don't they just do a DLC roster update model...?
