I typically drink the most when I'm on vacation which is in warm weather. My weeks of the most alcohol consumption have definitely been in the Caribbean or in some white sand clear water beach.

I don't drink any differently in the summer than I do in the winter. If anything I drink more in the summer because I go out and hang out with friends more.

I can tell you that my friends who moved from the DC Metro area to San Diego drink more than they did around here.

So basically this assumption is really dumb and false based on anecdotal evidence.

I also want to move where it's warm year round. We had snow Friday into Saturday and it fucking sucked and almost ruined my plans for Saturday. Thankfully it only snowed like an inch or so and the roads were fine.

I wonder if there's a proper medical term for this condition.

New England-itus? If you have the proper gear and dress for the occasion, any weather is bearable. Did a winter hike in the NH White Mountains last year and reached a 5000 foot summit. Was negative 25 up there with strong winds so who knows what the wind chill really was. I view it as a challenge and a counterweight to all the time I spend under artificial lighting and breathing in HVAC air.

Sub-zero weather is bearable, yeah. It's also fucking miserable as shit. Anything below 20º can fuck right off, but all sub-freezing weather is bad.

there are warm places where people drink a lot.

This thing with the climate seems to apply to the EMEA region mostly, that's why they have big alcohol taxes in scandinavia and alcohol issues in Russia, but the fact is that here if you go south you enter into islamic areas before you get to a place where the winters really are t-shirt warm, so the correlation between latitude and alcohol consumption is stronger because of this unrelated reason.

That part gets depressing, but it's nice not living in a big expensive city that's packed and has crazy traffic and everything is expensive etc. Fun to visit those places but would not want to live there. Nice being able to live in a normal size house that's cheaper than a janitor closet down town Toronto, and still be 5 minutes from work. It has it's perks.
You realize there is somewhere in between the 2 extremes of bum fuck nowhere and a big busy city like NYC, right?

I think I actually drink more during the summer here where I'm more likely to hit a happy hour to sit outside with friends or BBQ. During the winter, I'm lucky to drink one night a week.

Of course we get a lot of sun all year round here...last Saturday was a pretty good example of CO weather in the winter... there may be snow on the ground, but the sun is generally out...

Got to admit, a little alcohol always warms me up inside, plus you're inside anyways because it's too darn cold outside!

I don't drink because the weather is miserable. I like the cold, the colder the better. The more snow and windy the better IMO. Nothing like bitter coldness that makes you feel alive. I enjoy being outside when its below zero. Anyway I also tend to drink more in the winter. Nice way to feel warmer. Go out for a walk to admire the winter scenery and have a shot or two before hand to take the shiver out of your step. Its darker earlier and sitting in a warm house bundled up with sweat pants and flannel makes for good times to enjoy a drink. When you have a 2 day blizzard howling outside and you cant get to work, what else can you really do?

Agree with all of this. I was so happy about our first real snow of the season this past weekend in Boston ... I went outside to shovel and I came back in telling my GF that my ideal climate is winter and snow half the year and a cool spring/fall type of weather the rest. She agreed with me.

We both want to make a move out to Colorado, where nice cool mountaintops are a hike away in the middle of the summer ... every time PricklyPete posts a picture, it makes me want to accelerate the plan. We visited end of August last year and were pretty excited to see a snow shower or two and the start of some decent snow coverage at higher elevations.

I have a huge appreciation for the winter and the activities it allows. Skiing, winter hiking with snowshoes and sledding. I'd love to get into ice climbing as the White Mountains have plenty of frozen waterfalls and ice flows that grow to impressive sizes and allow for climbing. Some of my most memorable nature scenes are those of a winter landscape especially when viewed from a mountain peak. Everyone always says that winter is so bleak but I couldn't disagree more. The image of snow covered forests and mountains is majestic. Or hiking a trail where the tree limbs are bowed low and feet of snow are everywhere, the deadened sound the snow provides makes for a different landscape that is enjoyable to me. It gets really quiet in the winter (especially in the woods) and I enjoy the isolating effects. We go for walks on frozen lakes and its cool to see the lake from this unique standpoint. Ice skating is also fun. Hell I dont even mind snowblowing or shoveling. Yes it is cold and if you are ill prepared with the wrong gear, you will get a brutal reminder. Even my hands gets painfully frostbitten at times. Again, with the right gear and preparation, you can deal with it and even enjoy the weather. To this end, I grow a beard too: 6 months clean shaven and 6 months bearded.

Plus in the winter, its the season made explicitly for baking. Who wants to run the oven during the summer and heat up the house? We bake a few times a week during the winter and eat quite heartily. Then you settle in front of the stove and the radiative heating effect is soooo comfortable. Me and the woman on a couch cuddled up in warm clothing with a few cats is something I'll never get tired of...

I think people in Wisconsin drink the most.
Wisconsin gets nice winters!
They just love delicious beer and brandy with their cheese and sausages..

A lot of the NE was settled by Scots/Irish, just sayin...

Also, I don't think your Cali couple gets around out much. Americans are easy on the sauce by comparison to other nationalities.

I would have assumed OP had a point, living in the shadow of Wisconsin as I do, but DC is relatively southerly, as are Nevada and Nebraska. Meanwhile, if he were right... WHAR MAINE AND CONNECTICUT?!? WHAR?!?!

Colorado also seems out of place.

I guess Wisconsin really just talks a good game, but they're only getting buzzed enough to tolerate fat people sex; not drinking to forget like those motherfuckers in DC.

Yeah, I'm baffled by Maine not being on that list too. Washington county itself could be some kind of study.
