Thailand has the 3rd highest fatality rate in the world when it comes to auto accidents.
1. People do not stop at the zebra crosswalks. This is something westerners are used to. It's an adventure crossing the road, and sometimes frightening.
2. I hardly see anyone wearing a helmet. Riding a motor bike is very popular because it's cheap, and you can easily navigate around busy traffic. Traffic jams in Bangkok are sometimes unbearable.
3. Thai women like riding side saddle. No helmet. I'm surprised I don't see more deaths.
4. Never take a bus at night, and never take one a long distance. Thai bus drivers are known to race each other. Also, they drive so quickly that overturning their bus happens frequently. If this happens most will flee the scene so they don't get in trouble. .
5. Whenever I get in the back of a cab the first thing I do is look for the seatbelt. Well 9 times out of 10 the seatbelt has been taken out. It drives me nuts, so I will usually take the front seat just because it has a seatbelt.
6. I hope I never get into a serious accident. They don't have an ambulance like we're used to back home. They get a pickup truck and put a flashing light on top. That's the ambulance. You know how we're told to never move an injured person? It doesn't matter. The Thai worker will just pick you up and throw you in the back of the pickup truck, regardless of your injury.
I think it has to do with their Buddha upbringing. They believe that when things happen to us, we have no control. It was meant to happen.
