We are all doing the same, with CO2. Am I evil for not caring?
What?
CO != CO2. CO will bind fairly irreversibly to the RBC in place of where O2 would normally bind; thus oxygen cannot reach your cells and they cannot make large amounts of ATP in the mitochondria, essentially starving your body of energy.
CO2 doesn't bind nearly as tightly and thus isn't as deadly. Of course, high concentrations of CO2 will also kill you.
If you're referring to CO2 output by large factories and cars, much of that ends up in the upper atmosphere, where it acts to reflect thermal energy back to the ground as a greenhouse gas.
