In KY 600K people are without power. After numerous warnings on TV and radio to warn about what anybody should already know "don't run generators or grills indoors, you will die" 3 people have died so far. There will probably be more.

I know it's tragic but I can't help thinking who in the world would run a charcoal or gas grill or generator inside?

http://www.wlky.com/news/18599785/detail.html

"McConnell said the hospital had treated 11 people within the first 24 hours of the power outage, including a pregnant northern Kentucky woman and her 17-month-old child found passed out in their home by power crews."

Why should you feel sympathy for people who are trying to stay warm?

Sometimes you have to decide which way you'd rather die. Either they freeze to death, or they die high as a kite in warmth.

What would you choose?

Happened in Seattle a few years ago during the power outages. A lot of the people that died were LEGAL immigrants who couldn't speak the language well enough to read the warning labels and hadn't grown up with grills and generators so had no idea it was dangerous. The Times wound up printing a warning as their headline in eight languages in giant type.

No sympathy for a 17-month old child? Yes, that's fucked-up.

You are not evil, Spidey. You are merely emotionally deficient in a way so basic and profound that you and the countless other developmentally delayed or merely emotionally immature posters who will FLOOD in here to defend you and castigate me are simply ill-equipped to understand.

I see [emotionally] stupid people everywhere, they don't even know that they are [so emotionally retarded, they are] dumb

Oh, the ironing!

I don't know what to say on this. When everything is designed to be idiot proof, a lot of idiots are going to survive to adulthood...worse they are bred to believe that everything is idiot proof so they don't do anything with care anymore.

Its like that commercial for the volvo where some bitch is driving her car while making a PB&J in the passenger seat or something and the car starts beeping at her to tell her she's about to plow into a schoolbus or something. The woman looks up and actually smiles after the car saves her from herself. She doesn't look flustered that she almost caused an accident through her own absolute idiocy...she actually looks pleased that the world has finally reached a state where she protected from her own stupidity. That same woman is going to go buy the most expensive generator available and start it up inside her attached garage with the door shut and complain about how loud it is while she tries to fall asleep in front of the TV.

Now, I'd be lying if I said I knew how to do everything...or even that I was particularly smart or handy. However, what I do know is that I should read the manual if I haven't ever done something before because it usually has obvious tips that I may not have thought of before.

This is why you don't immigrate to a country without learning the language to the point of proficiency.

If you can't read "WARNING: DO NOT RUN INDOORS", you shouldn't be living in an English speaking country.

Yep. I've never heard of a white english speaking individual return something past due at the store when the reciept clearly states that no returns after 30 days. They can't fucking read.
Ship them off to Somalia asap!

Maybe there's a different word then. It's tragic and could have easily been avoided, so I guess I feel sorry for that/them.

Considering that my in-laws don't speak English... I completely agree. If you come, prepare to be integrated into the culture. However, that doesn't address the reality of the situation and the fact that this is sad and not necessarily related to stupidity.

I feel sorry they were born to stupid parents, and may not live to adulthood because of their parents lack of common sense.

Outside of that though.... Nope don't feel bad for idiots.

I'm pretty sure they can read it, they just chose not to or didn't notice the obvious. Two different forms of willful ignorance. I wouldn't move to China without learning a good deal of Mandarin.

I think it's stupid in a very sad way.

Well, learning the language before coming here is a pretty steep requirement, especially since many come from very poor countries. My parents came over as refugees from a war, and for the first two years or so here, they couldn't read such a sign. Now, they are productive members of society, so I would have to respectfully disagree with you on that. I do believe immigrants should show a willingness to learn English, but to require prior study is unfair to poor countries, where it simply isn't possible.

I'm pretty sure they can learn it for cheap here, and it doesn't take much to read a warning label. I'm not saying we should have an English proficiency test for immigrants, but I don't think it's asking a lot to learn what most 2nd graders could read.

Did people's cars or other means of transportation stop working when the power went out? If you're in imminent danger of hypothermia (unlikely since people can survive in snow caves but whatever) then go drive somewhere with power like a hospital and warm up. It's common knowledge that running your car in an enclosed space is an efficient way to kill yourself. Why would a generator engine be so much safer?

I have as much sympathy as I'd have when any mentally challenged person dies because someone of normal intelligence wasn't watching out for them.

I wonder if all the people who die from CO poisoning have ever tried to breath the warm "air" coming out of a car's exhaust?

Get a $5 extension cord and plug in a heater running from inside to outside.

How hard is that?
