Please don't tell people to go to Geno's. Pats is much better. And you have to go after a Flyers or Phillies game and watch the crowd. For out-of-towners, the crowd is part of the experience.

Han Dynasty is not bad in Old City (this is near the museum district where the Liberty Bell is). But only if you don't mind spicy food. Their new location is pretty sweet.

If you want to relax with a couple of cocktails and want to try something different, try Hop Sing Laundromat in Philly Chinatown. They do have a dress code so dress nice. No sneakers and t-shirts.

I'll admit that after 5 years of living in the area (sort of, I live in Bucks County, but I'm in Philly a lot) I've never had a real cheesesteak. I don't understand all the arguing though, It's just a greasy steak sandwich with some processed "cheese". Is there really that much difference between Pat's, Geno's, and Tony Luke's?

Dem's fightin words!

I'm just kidding. I've only been to Pat's and Geno's, and the 2 sandwiches are different (we got same toppings for an even comparison.) However, I can't remember which I preferred.

John's Roast Pork has the best cheese steak, but I agree that Pats is better than Genos.

Geno's and Pat's both have awful cheese steaks. I've gotten better cheese steaks from fast food joints.

See, this is why I've never had one. I'm not in South Philly that much, and I don't feel like making a special trip for a goddamn cheesesteak, especially when so many people are always saying they suck or are mediocre.

jims on south street has good cheesesteak, as does tony lukes. honestly, just look on yelp and you will find tons of recommends for cheese steak joints depending on where in philly you are going to be. aside from cheesesteaks, philly has tons of great places for wining and dining, and drinking afterwards.
try zahav for delicious mediterranean ( i dont even like this genre of food generally), vetri for really fancy, morimotos for excellent authentic sushi and japanese fusion entrees, han dynasty for spicy chinese, R2L for a very nice view on top of the city... i could go on.

i was here last month. bartenders know how to make an awesome drink. great atmosphere for chilling too. euology and monks have good beer selection and belgian food

F that guy, my family knows him personally because we supply restaurant supplies to him. He picks his nose religiously and he often use expired fish. I would not eat there even if you pay me.

good thing he doesnt even show up to his philly restaurant anymore. Personally the first time i went there was last month and to me it lived up to all its hype. Trust me when i say i know my sushi, i thought it was up there with anything i've had anywhere in japan. the appetizers we had were out of this world, particularly uni carbonara. all of the other joints in philly i've been to just serve tarted and sauced up dragon and california roll BS. so sick of that shit. but the best sushi joints in philly are in south jersey suburbs.

Grew up in/around Philly, family is still there so I visit a lot.

Vetri for high end Italian. La Locanda (actually in south jersey) for mid-priced, solid Italian cooking. If you want to stay in the city, Tre Scalini on Passyunk is good. Fond is on my to-do list.

Best cheesesteak in Philly is at Cosmi's in South Philly. It's a deli, google it. If you're sticking to the center city area, Jim's is also very good.

Nick's Roast Beef for a sandwich.

Capogiro is great for gelato.

Monk's Cafe for mussels and beer.

You might as well post where you're staying and we'll give you some options within walking distance as well.

I only lived there in college and ate mostly crap. But when my parents came to visit I did get to try a few good places lol. I liked the bar/pub called "Sassafras", and between UPenn and Drexel there's a nice little lunch/cafe type place called "White Dog Cafe". There's also a "Cuba Libre" there which I had a few good dinners at.

And why is everyone saying Pats and Genos? Don't get me wrong, I love a good cheesesteak, but those two places are overpriced garbage. And besides, Philadelphia has much better food than just cheesesteaks.

^^^ This. If you must have a cheesesteak, go to Tony Lukes. Better yet, go there and get the Roast Pork with garlic, provolone and broccoli rabe. Also, actually Jim's on around 5th and South St. isn't all that bad, as someone else here said. Once on South St, you can wander around all the other shops, and there's a place around 10th with decent and inexpensive Greek food. Just don't go to South St. on a weekend night, when it's over-stuffed with "youts" from N.E. Philly and (New) Joisey. Ruffians, I tell you, ruffians!

^^^ But especially this. The Reading Terminal Market is beyond awesome. Stall after stall, including some with Amish "babes" in full but genuine regalia who come by truck daily from Lancaster County. The Market is more of a lunch destination, though.
