People seriously excited for the Thunderbolt?

I thought the same thing. I saw some adverts around the web, and decided to YouTube and see what the hype was about.

Looks exactly like an Evo...and the videos I've seen make the phone look less than stellar. (Slow Sense interface)

Well, they have a winning formula, Verizon needed a device to release for LTE, HTC had a pretty well ready made platform for it.

The dual core stuff is coming, but not this week...

LTE on V will be sweet, especially considering their 3G speeds aren't anything to brag about.

Root it, slap a launcher on it, and you'll have a decent phone.

I was bummed seeing the EVO at the bottom of the speed test charts a couple of days ago, then I rooted a stock EVO for a friend, and realized that they're a hell of a lot smoother to use after a bit of tinkering...

It's just about the 4 month wait to the Bionic for me. I've been waiting for a smartphone for a long time now and I'm getting impatient. Whether or not I get a TB will mostly depend on if it feels fast enough to last me two years.

It's nicer looking aesthetically than any of the other Verizon 4G phones as well, imo, which isn't a deal-breaker but is certainly a plus.

Mostly because other than the iPhone 4, the only other announced phone (to my knowledge) on Verizon is the Bionic, which probably won't come out for another 1-4 months.

I am excited about it. I need a phone and simply can't wait indefinitely. There will always be another, better phone about to drop "about 4 months out."

My thoughts exactly. I've been sitting on an upgrade since November and am tired of waiting.

If you've waited since nov you should have pick up any if the current droids/galaxy/HTC devices.

Quite frankly dual core 2011 or bust IMO.

I'm not so sure dual core is that great. Check out engadget's review of the optimus.

That looks more software related. They said LG's custom software sucked and was buggy and not ready for prime-time.

I skimmed through it. I think dualcore has the potential to be really speedy, it just needs to be implemented right. I think either samsung/HTC will have the fastest dual core android phones.

I know you weren't quoting me, but I have waited a lot longer than Nov. I am still using a Nokia N97 and was going to get an Incredible when the new phones were announced. I then waited for those. I am not waiting even longer. I couldn't care less about dual core, since my phone is at least 3 years old now. Besides, I am on ATT now and can't stand it and need to switch.

After seeing the Optimus 2X reviews I'm leaning back towards the Bionic. Oh dear.

I'm talking about this:

Once you get past those well executed headline features, however, there's a certain scarcity of real utility to be had from this dual-core chip. The trouble is that smartphones haven't really lacked for processing firepower in a good long while. What applications do you run on your mobile that can choke a 1GHz CPU, whether it be a Snapdragon, Hummingbird or an A4? There aren't many, right? And there are even fewer that have such a demanding overhead while running in the background -- which happens to be NVIDIA's big selling point for Tegra 2, that it allows you to multitask without ever getting bogged down. The chart below illustrates this well, but it also provides your absolute best case scenario -- you'll need to be engaged in a CPU-intensive process while decoding music in the background, another CPU job, and downloading / installing applications. As soon as you back off, say by switching off the background music and allowing your foreground process to have all the processing power (and thereby complete its task more quickly), the benefits of having a dual-core machine will become far less tangible.

And this:

The conclusion therefore is that, yes, multitasking maniacs will find their mobile lives accelerated by having that second core, but the rest of the world might very well shrug its shoulders and ask "is that it?" Like a city dweller owning a supercar, the Tegra 2 buyer will have to be wary of the fact that his hardware will far exceed his daily needs and will only show its true, brilliant colors on rare occasions and under just the right circumstances.

I already answered that. At that point the TB and some other phones were known to be coming out "4 months from now, " and the general consensus was to wait for them. The thought process was that if you didn't already have one or a Droid X you should hold out for one of those or the Iphone (since the specs weren't announced yet.) At this point I don't want the Iphone 4, and don't really want to wait until the Iphone 5 is announced. I wasn't about to buy the Incredible when a month later two new phones were coming out....the Iphone and the TB. Now they are coming out, I am not waiting another 4 months. I will get the TB on a 1 yr plan, and when that ends I won't have very long to wait to upgrade.

The Thunderbolt, unlike the Bionic, will likely see a lot of good roms and development for it. Assuming Moto follows suit with their history, the Bionic will be locked down and not any any full custom builds in its life cycle. Course, there is there were those tweets about a 'developer friendly' solution, so who knows.

Also, the Thunderbolt may look similar on the outside to the Evo, lets not forget that the TB boasts the newest revision of the single core Snapdragon, 45nm and with the much faster Adreno 205 GPU to back it up. On a purely performance level, the TB should easily eat the Evo for breakfast.

On the lack of GB, it is disappointing. However, HTC does have the best overall track record with OS updates, both official and unofficial.

Bitching about smartphone specs is purely a paper drill. The Evo hardware is still plenty fast. Maybe it's because mine is rooted and running Fresh ROM, but it doesn't get slow. Really, it doesn't. Dual core is a waste at this point. The next drastic improvement on Android is GPU acceleration of the UI. Until that happens, you're not going to see anything too impressive in terms of performance increases. And no, running benchmarks doesn't count.

Not to mention, the Thunderbolt should have the Snapdragon w/ the die shrink.

Happened a few months ago with the release of Gingerbread.

Has it happened on a phone yet? I assume the Nexus S, but what else has been updated (or ships with) 2.3 as of now?

I can't wait to see it on the Evo.

Other than the Nexus S, which is a POS, there's no other phone with an official 2.3 build. Several ROMs are available though, CM7 nightlies for all their supported handsets.

You have to plan out how you're gonna wait for tech. The Incredible was released in May 2009 and other smartphones thereafter were still similar in specs. You could have gotten a 1ghz phone within that 6 month time period. Now the single core train has left the station and dual core is coming soon.

Aside from LTE, the Thunderbolt is just like any other Android phone. DroidX, Incredible, EVO, Galaxy, etc.

Is this true? I remember reading GPU acceleration was just speculation even for Honeycomb. I would be surprised if its incorporated into Gingerbread.
