People seriously use the word 'Jewed' and think its ok?

Do people really think its not offensive?

People seemed to finally stop saying 'Gyped' (sp?) as it was deemed offensive.. I heard it much more as a kid, but its no longer PC. Have they not gotten the memo about 'Jewed'?

I use both of them, unless I'm among a murder of hasids (what is the "flock" term for them?). Surprisingly I don't often find myself among a flock of gypsies very often... so I use gypped whenever I want.

Edit: I've lived in SoCal my entire life, and I don't think I've ever heard the term "Jewed" used more than once or twice, and not in a serious manner at that.

Now see, I've heard "gyped" before and never thought anything of it. (I also thought it was spelled "jipped," but TFD.com disagrees. "Gyped" is correct.) And when spelled that way, I immediately associate it with Gypsies. Just something I never knew to think about until now. I always thought it was little more than a benign synonym for "cheated," in the context of being cheated out of a deal.

I guess it'd be like when Huck Finn called Jim the N-word which we are not allowed to say here - it's all he knew to call Jim, and I don't think he meant to use it offensively, as Jim was his friend. He grew up hearing the word, and figured that's the word to use.

Which goes to show you don't understand how racism works. "White Slurs" while technically racist don't carry any weight. History is what makes a racial slur truly racist.

I agree that people need to lighten up a bit on the PC non-sense. Yes, the word is derived from a racial stereotype which makes it offensive to some. However, I know that when I hear it, I just think of it defined as "being cheap" with absolutely no reflection on it's history or stereotype - to me, it's really just a word. Personally though, I don't use it just because it's not part of my vernacular. Although, I do sometimes use it to bust the balls of a Jewish frien of mine when we're out to eat as he never tips more than 12% (that's a lie - for great service he says he might go 15, but I've never seen it). And even then I need to make a conscious effort to think it up, because really, it's often funny when people reinforce stereotypes.

Ok, this is getting a little out of hand. "Gyped"? I say that all the time and I never knew if related to a group of people until you just spelled it. I thought it was just another word meaning "ripped off." Jeez.

Its funny, I used to use the word "gyped" alot as tell and also like JackBurton though it was spelled "jipped", it wasn't until 11th grade that it sort of came to me that the word might actually be a reference to Gypsies, so I looked it up on the internet's and it did. How this relates to this thread is that at the same time I was looking it up I thought that maybe if gyped was a word than maybe someone had made a similar word "jewed" to describe the stereotype of Jewish people being money grubbers. So it wasn't until 11th grade that I even knew such a word as "jewed" existed and I have NEVER heard it used a single time in a conversation except as a joke. Additionally I live in the deep south, so if you think people in the south are the most racist than you are wrong when it comes to jews in my experience. That being said, there likely aren't as many Jews in the south (less $$$ ) as in other areas, so that might be why not so racist here.

no, "Jewed" refers to the stereotype that Jews will screw you out of money, not to the fact that they are pretty much always screwed over in history. In fact the reason WHY Jews are often screwed over is BECAUSE of that stereotype. Last I checked historically speaking it was because the bible said that Christians weren't supposed to charge each other interest, so back in the day Jews got into the banking industry because they were the only ones who could profit from it without going against their religion. Of course this didn't exactly make alot of Christians happy that the Jews were all getting rich by going against the bible, so hatred and persecution ensued etc..

I've heard and used gypped for most of my life but had no clue that it had to do with gypsies..lol. Well shit, now I know. I have never heard anyone use the word "jewed" though. You figure here in NYC I would have heard it but alas I haven't.
