I don't think anything said in this thread is going to change whether people use it or any other racial slur. But know this, it is derogatory and don't be surprised if someone is hurt or offended by it.

Who gives a shit if it's offensive. People need to lighten the hell up. I'm white and when I hear a white slur... I couldn't possibly care less. Oh, and I got jewed out of monitor on craigslist today. Oh well.

Which goes to show you don't understand how racism works. "White Slurs" while technically racist don't carry any weight. History is what makes a racial slur truly racist.

Uh, what?

I heard it twice today, once in person (while walking through CompUSA) and another time someone said it online.

Do people really think its not offensive?

People seemed to finally stop saying 'Gyped' (sp?) as it was deemed offensive.. I heard it much more as a kid, but its no longer PC. Have they not gotten the memo about 'Jewed'?
I don't say it, but is it acceptable for a Jewish person to say?
No we don`t use it!!

And yeh, the Gypsies have long been offended by the word gypped. : /

I've heard it used for a solid 6+ years.
Never used it, but not offended by it. Usually just laughed when I was called it.

People forget that they are just words and nothing more (yeah I know there are more I just don't feel like thinking of anymore).

They are just words, get over it.

Personally I find the phrase "Politically Correct" the most offensive phrase in the English language. Unfortunately most people don't agree with me.

I'm a jew and I use it. I don't have a problem with it.
If you're not a jew and you have a problem with it, tough shit, shut your mouth.

Being overly politically correct is dangerous and boring.
Differences and common trends should be made fun of if they can be made funny.

Oh yeah, I'm 1/32nd Jew, and, by applying the Law of How Much Black is Required to Be Considered Black to my Jewishness, this makes me a Jew. So I am permitted to say anything I want, and confer upon every non-Jew the right to say anything they want about all Jews. Right conferred.

and its not history that makes a word racist. its racist that do.

No, I'm pretty sure it's people like you who made the word racist (didn't think words could be racist, but whatever). The racists didn't decide that the words were going to be offensive, it was the politically correct douche bags that decided the words were offensive. The racists just ran with it.

Here's something to think about too. Jewish people CHOOSE to be Jews, blacks don't choose to be black, so you really can't compare racist remarks to other run of the mill derogatory terms.

I heard someone say they were Canucked the other day...I took it as a compliment!

Everyone in the world is too sensitive these days. Laugh it off and get on with your life.

Jewish people CHOOSE to practice Judaism and converts CHOOSE to be Jewish.

Most Jews are born Jewish.

I was BORN an American
My parents CHOSE for me to practice Judaism
I CHOSE not to once I stopped living in their house.

American is your nationality. Judaism is not a nationality. It is a religion and a culture. You were BORN an American Jew.

If your mother was Jewish, then, technically, you are Jewish, regardless of whether you practice Judaism or not.

Sorry, you are still MOT.

I know you're trying hard to be funny, but it's just not working out.

Actually, I'm trying to point out two things: first off, that people tend to look for any reason they can to claim the right to be persecuted (claiming to be a minority because the hold even the minutest quantity of a minority bloodline, most usually claimed by black people); second, that people want to be able to generalize about the offensiveness of anything as it applies to an entire people, as though "Jews" find something offensive. As you pointed out, you are a Jew and it doesn't bother you, yet people still insist on labeling something offensive to all Jews because some Jews don't like it, like all these sensitive bleeding hearts are here to save the entire Jewish "race" from the hateful speech of intolerant bigots.

But thanks for going out of your way to insult me with no provocation on my part...

If I don't practice and I'm atheist how the Hell does that still make me Jewish?

That's only according to Jewish conventions. In other words, if he chose to be Jewish, he could call himself a "real" Jew since his mother was Jewish.

However, since he chose to discontinue being Jewish, Jewish convention does not apply to him. That's like someone of some other religion saying that I'm xxx because their religion teaches that xxx applies to me. But since I don't follow their belief system, their beliefs are irrelevant to me.

If the man says he's not Jewish anymore, he's not Jewish, and Jewish conventions do not apply to him.
