[FONT=Verdana, Arial]Got something in the mail today about Blast internet speed for 69 dollars, when I pay around $62 or so for the performance tier, but the extra $$$ is renting out the modem and taxes.

So I called them up about that, it was very very vague on the promotion about that as you need TV with that too, which I don't have. As I have DirecTV.

Here is the deal though, there is a promotion for existing customers, they said you are in luck. You can get blast for 3 months (was late on the promotion so for me it will end on Oct 3rd). No extra charges or anything it's just a free upgrade and if you don't like it you can just say you don't want the blast and go back to your old plan.

Performance: Downloads up to 12 Mbps, uploads up to 2 Mbps with PowerBoost. Which I've had for years now, but for free you can get this now:

Blast: Downloads up to 20 Mbps, uploads up to 2 Mbps with PowerBoost.

Sucks that upload didn't change but for free, what the hell, might as well call them up and and get some faster internet for free.

1.4 megs per sec is fine with me but free is free. Just wanted to give you a guys a head up.

12 mbps compared to 20 is insane. In order to max out that full speed I have to d/l some linux distros and massive amounts of porn on torrents to see if I can actually top out the full speed. Funny though, I'm going to do it for the hell of it then they will kick me off of comcast because I hit over their "magical" 200 gigs per month Fuck the download speed, let's crank up the upload.

Anyways, just call - 1866-563-4502. It last's until July 24th, and we missed out on a few weeks, but hey, it took me 3 minutes to talk to the lady, she said it's 100% free, no hidden charges, and I got the new speed instantly.

I can get 1.40 MB with my plan but with the new one it's 2.5 megs per sec. How In the hell can or need to do 2.5 megs per second? Not a clue, but it's free so why the F not

The people on the phone were great and they changed the speed instantly. I restarted my modem just in case but haven't checked it out yet but I know according to them it's instant.

Total total random thing but for people who have Comcast internet it won't cost you a dime, so you might as well. If they did up the u/l from 2 to 4, I'd pay the extra $10 per month but I'm in the USA and don't live In Sweden or have Fios so whatever. Free is free.

Thanks for the info. I will try to call em later and see how i fiar in FL. I have their tv/phone/internet package. Their data is for 250 gigs not 200. Although the past two months I reached 260gb. The wording on their data tracker on the website suggests they would contact the top offenders of exceeding their data caps.

This is why I have FIOS, my total household use is ~450Gb per month :\

I'm quite jealous . My brother has FIOS, but sadly verizon appears to have stopped their expansion of FIOS because of low penetration rates. Fortunately I should be moving next year to either tampa/orlando which both areas have FIOS. One thing i'll certainly look for in a new apt is FIOS access lol.

Sorry for the slight derail

I am considering switching to my area's fastest FIOS connection (150Mbps up and 35Mbps down) but at 200 bucks a month im not sure if it is worth it (and the Girlfriend would kill me!) But after having comcast for 2 years while waiting for FIOS i must say i will never be going back, I have had FIOS for about 2 and a half years now and i haven't had any real problems requiring me to call in for support!

Sorry for another derail!

Waiting for FIOS in the Reading Pa area. My Comcast is $55/m with 25mbs down and 5mbs up. Capped at 250gb total down. This works for me til FIOS comes around as I am not a Comcast fan and will drop them for any better internet service. As far as I know b/c I have had their internet forever. I have never been offered any type of speed plan. I donno how this will work for me. I have had them forever b/c their is no better plan around.

I've got FiOS 35/35 and typically get download speeds (from FAST torrents) of about 45 (~5.4MB/sec or about 320MB/min) so I'm VERY happy with my FiOS!

yeah they only really contact the top x% of 'offenders' and no one is sure what that percent is.

I've gone over maybe 3 times in the last 2 years by a little and never heard a peep from them.

although years ago I doubled up and got a few angry phone calls from them that are probably CSR training calls now :sneaky:

i thank the local large university for allowing me to go over a little and never hearing about it

You comcast people are very fortunate. Here in Columbia, SC I pay $41.99/month with Earthlink/Time Warner for 7mbps down and a very pathetic 384 kb/s up. Even the fastest available is 10mbps down and a very, very pathetic 512 kb/s up. The upload speed here is so stupid that its actually pathetic.

I recently moved (different state) and have noticed a trend with the ISPs that is rather disturbing. Tiered service with caps. I was aware of all the talk, but its a reality now. Why is no one else troubled by this?

Tea Party says FCC shouldn't tell cable companies what to do.

The duopolies that exist seem to be the problem. I have a friend lives in another city with FIOS and their cable service magically has similar speeds to FIOS, no caps, and competitive TV pricing. Sadly FIOS expansion is dead, and companies that aren't forced to compete will always choose the cheapest route.

I don't think caps / tiers are really terrible if they could be more flexible and a bit more competitive. I mean if caps don't change every other year or so there is no chance they can keep up with technology. Cheap video cameras can produce 720p at a pretty good quality.

I gotta agree... they tier cap then call anyone that goes over their artificial boundary an "offender" like you committed a crime. That's offensive to me. You paid for the service you are a customer and if they don't start treating people right then they will be losing business.

In vacation in Vermont atm. Supposidly the whole state is going to have FIOS within the next 2 years. You are talking about 650,000 people so its not too tuff.

"Cities in Vermont likely to have, or soon to receive, fiber optic cable internet services include Burlington, Essex, Rutland, Colchester, South Burlington and Montpelier. Locations in VT with highest population counts will be targeted first by providers, though relatively high speeds can be achieved with dial-up or DSL through companies such as Netzero and Charter Communications Cable."

the industry has a deathgrip on their shitty infastructure because they dont want to spend a dime of their money so they just add a couple megs here and there and charge 40% more. i hate cable companies. they arent communications companies, they could care less if people talked they just want people to absorb whatever shit they feed them.

I believe that with the Comcast upgrade another cable modem is required. I upgraded and was told to I had to add another modem to take advantage of the increased speeds. I still haven't added the higher speed modem. Of course they want to have a technician install it for a service cost, but you can pick it up at the local Comcast store and install it yourself.

Yeah to get the real high speed Comcast internet, its not Comcast crap either, you will need a DOCSIS 3 capable modem.

It is not a big factor to upgrade modems from what I know as DOCSIS 2 has pretty good speed in relation to what Comcast is giving you. If Comcast gave you a lot more speed then you would need a DOCSIS modem. If you want to have it all, you might as well get a new modem.

I went with the above modem to match the gigabit network that is in my house.

I have comcast as well - I saw my 12/2 (more like 9-10/1.5 with speed tests) connection jump to 17/7 sometimes 25/9 when i upgraded to DOCSIS 3, just FYI. This, however, has not reconciled any of my feelings towards comcast and didn't effect real world performance much beyond pings.

I thought about doing this, but every device/computer in my house is on 802.11g with throughput of only about 15-16mbit anyway.
