while one can't say accurately if the dog was hurt by the owner or something else the fact is a responsible pet owner doesn't just tie their pet's on a leash in a public area and leave it unattended.

It's the same that these yuppie types try to sneak their pets into home improvement places like Home Depot. There is a reason they state no pets are allowed nor unattended children.

Wrong.

People are animals. That's what I learned in biology, anyway.

Baked was just trolling in case you didn't know. He is on either side of the fence depending on who has the most backing.

If your treatment is cruel in any way and you do it in front of me, you'll do it only once. This is not a threat, but your assurance of unintended consequences.

Whoa that is a serious statement right there.

 hating animals doesn't make anyone *HARD*....hurting them just makes them a *PUSSY*.

People like to talk shit about how they beat their pets and they're just 'food'...in the US, pets are a protected class.

I was hoping saying we're all the same had some inkling of humor (though didn't know he was trolling), usually it's obvious like they belong right next to the mashed potatoes )

If so, the dog was only doing what was right. We all want to take a crap inside Walmart somewhere, I mean the place does seem to be a giant toilet. Our mind is just wired in a way to tell us that it wouldn't be a nice thing to do. Dogs lack this wiring, so they do what they want.

That reminds me, when I was a kid I went to Burger King with my dog, tied it up outside, and went to buy a whopper. I came out, walked with the dog a bit, and started to unwrap the whopper. The whole time my dog was staring at me and the whopper, already wanting a piece. As I lifted the whopper towards my mouth, my dog delibertely pulled like crazy on the leash jerking me forward and making the whopper fall out of my hand onto the sidewalk. Seeing my beautiful beef splattered burger on the groud caused me to go into a furious rage. I went into HULK SMASH mode grabbing one end of the leash and attempting to batter my dog with it, but it was too late, he was gobbling the whopper up in a frenzy as I was attempting to DPS him. It was funny cause people on the sidewalk were looking at us, it must of been a funny scene I don't think the dog took any damage, it's like the need for the whopper made him immune to the whips.

Oh and the dog was a king size German Sheppard.

Smart dog.

The details of this particular incident/non-incident aside, more than once in my long life, I have intervened in such a situation.

The key is to remain calm and non-judgmental, and to ask the asshole dog beater in an extremely low-key way if everything is alright here. This lets them know that you know what happened without necessarily engendering a counter-productively defensive response. It opens the possibility of you saying something like, "hey, you're dog looks scared/in pain/upset. Dogs really want to obey their master, which, you, sir, clearly are. Having a bad day yourself? There's almost never the need to beat a dog, but then we dog owners all know that already. You love your dog, right?" Etc, etc, etc.

Interventionism is not for everyone, I know.

Why then, have I done this? Because I couldn't do otherwise and live comfortably with myself, that's why.

Actually as much as I'd love to beat the crap out of someone who is abusing their pet or even a wild animal, this is probably the best way to take it.

It will also make them feel bad possibly, depending on their level of compassion if they even have any.

Though I agree with your sentiments, I'm leaning towards the suggestion that you just don't have all the facts. I can think of a few occasions where my dog has done something silly where she let out a loud yelp, and I had nothing to do with it. In one case, she was so excited to see me after picking her up from a dog daycare place around here that she ended up winding herself up around my legs so tight that it choked her.

So, I think Perknose's approach is really the best here. I think most dog owners, even bad ones, know that people are generally hypersensitive about animal abuse and wouldn't abuse an animal so egregiously.

Indeed it is. And I chose my words carefully to avoid any confusion.

Same here. The last incident was when I saw some kid kick a stumbling homeless cat clear across a double-wide alleyway, into the wall and then laugh about it, I slammed his face into the same concrete wall three times and left him sobbing on the sidewalk in front of his dip-shit friends. I wish more people wouldn't let that kind of sub-human scum off so easy. The only animals in need of a real submission-beating is those types of people, the future little-hitlers, as I call them.
