We have a Cuban friend who orders in Spanish at the mexican place we go to all the time, but we have gone there enough that she knows the waiters/waitress pretty well.

I recall my HS Spanish class took a field trip to a Mexican restaurant and the teacher required us to order / converse with the staff in Spanish. We managed to get one of the few American waiters and he did not know Spanish.

I just order by numbers...

I just order combo "G" at every restaurant. If their menu uses numbers, it is the ascii equivalent. If that value is out of range, I apply modulus using their max combo number.

I give the stuff my best pronunciation. I refuse to speak Spanish in Mexican restaurants, because I know just enough to get by. If I started something in Spanish I'd get a barrage of dialog, and wouldn't know what the hell they were saying :^D

Now, I know a handful of nouns and verbs, a few phrases...and don't know any "messicans" well enough to practice on...:biggrin: I took Spanish 101 in the summer of 08, and due to lack of use..."Yo no recuerdo mucho."

I'm just the opposite. I don't know what the stuff is called in chinese so I just say, I'll have some of that cat over there. Sometimes I order dog, or rat, but usually I have some kind of cat dish. It's very good. Everyone knows this.

I order in Vietnamese at Vietnamese restaurants because I don't know the English names, or the English names are just silly, for instance, B&#250;n == rice vermicelli noodles. I do this despite the fact that the waiters were often born in America as I was, and we likely both speak English better than our Vietnamese. At Spanish-speaking restaurants, I only order in Spanish when my Spanish is better than their English, which is rare but sometimes happens (I studied abroad in Ecuador for a semester).

However, one time my dad insisted on ordering in Vietnamese at a Vietnamese restaurant despite the fact that the waiter was Korean-American, and my dad speaks perfectly good English. I felt rather embarrased translating for the confused waiter.
