Not really. If you are trying to "get in shape", i.e. cardio, being able to run 5 miles, etc..., then yes, smoking would have a significant effect. If you are simply trying to lose some extra pounds and tone up some muscle (or even build larger amounts of muscle), then smoking really wouldn't have that big of an effect.

Losing weight boils down to one thing... eating less. Exercising can help burn calories a little quicker and can increase your metabolism, but really isnt necessary. To build muscle, it really boils down to one thing... eating more, especially protein. Lifting just turns those extra calories (protein) into muscle. Since lifting is anaerobic, I doubt that getting a little winded from smoking would have much effect on the overall goal of gaining muscle. It might make your workouts a little more strenuous and uncomfortable, but it would still be entirely possible.

Alot of people are at the gym to look good, not be healthy. Alot of those same people are probably the ones who smoke to "look good/cool".

i didn't say it was impossible. i said it was stupid and counter-productive.

you know, it's also entirely possible to smoke your whole life and not get lung cancer.

I agree with you, smoking is stupid, but the idea of smoking while working out to "look good" really isn't stupid or counterproductive. Smoking while working out to "be healthy", on the otherhand, is quite stupid.

first off, i don't anybody should be smoking because it's one of the stupidest things people can do to themselves.
but seeing these people smoke just really makes you scratch your head sometimes.

1. doctors (or anyone in the health industry)- i'm sure they see smoking related deaths on a daily basis.

2. people that go to the gym- it's so counterproductive to what they're trying to achieve.

3. pregnant women- no additional commentary needed

and especially people in the dental field. :|

And yes, you should MYOFB.

Why is everyone so damn worried about what others are doing these days? Worried to the point of actually trying to force others to do what they think they should do.

I am in a unique position to hate smoking with a passion. But guess what I will NEVER do? Tell others what they should do. If someone ASKS my opinion, I will tell them what I think of smoking. But you will never catch me shoving that opinion down someone's throat.

And yes, this extends to what they do in front of their kids. It's THEIR kids, not yours.

Someday, when we have whittled away all of our freedoms and completely destroyed any sense of individuality, we will start another war to win them back and wonder why those before us so readily gave these things up.

The freedom to get cancer/other health problems, and to give others the same chance via second hand smoke. Very free indeed.

Same chance???

SHS is the overblown hype of the last two decades. So overblown, in fact, that private business property owners have lost their rights. The vast majority of studies actually show only a negligible increase of disease and only in heavy, long term exposure situations (such as living with a heavy smoker).

As for the personal risk to one's health, I will bet money you take a risk/risks in your life that I would not. I will bet money you do things that are detrimental to your health.

EVERYONE does something detrimental to their health or at risk of injury or death. It is MY body. Not yours or anyone else's. If I wanna jump out of airplanes, climb shear cliffs, eat fatty foods, drink sodas, consume alcohol or smoke until I suffocate, that is NONE of your business.

And do NOT pull the "cost to society" argument on me. If you don't want to pay for other people's risks, STOP PAYING. But stop using socialism as an excuse for robbing people of their individual rights and freedoms.

Now, in case you didn't see my thread, my mother just died from COPD. I hate smoking with a passion, yet fully support the freedom for anyone to do what they please with their own body AND property.
