Not really. If you are trying to "get in shape", i.e. cardio, being able to run 5 miles, etc..., then yes, smoking would have a significant effect. If you are simply trying to lose some extra pounds and tone up some muscle (or even build larger amounts of muscle), then smoking really wouldn't have that big of an effect.
Losing weight boils down to one thing... eating less. Exercising can help burn calories a little quicker and can increase your metabolism, but really isnt necessary. To build muscle, it really boils down to one thing... eating more, especially protein. Lifting just turns those extra calories (protein) into muscle. Since lifting is anaerobic, I doubt that getting a little winded from smoking would have much effect on the overall goal of gaining muscle. It might make your workouts a little more strenuous and uncomfortable, but it would still be entirely possible.
Alot of people are at the gym to look good, not be healthy. Alot of those same people are probably the ones who smoke to "look good/cool".
i didn't say it was impossible. i said it was stupid and counter-productive.
you know, it's also entirely possible to smoke your whole life and not get lung cancer.
I agree with you, smoking is stupid, but the idea of smoking while working out to "look good" really isn't stupid or counterproductive. Smoking while working out to "be healthy", on the otherhand, is quite stupid.
