Cheating is fun in singleplayer. I laugh at all of you that say "I feel more accomplished if I beat the game legitimately." Really? It's a game. What's the difference if it takes you 30 hours and only takes me 2 if we both still enjoy it?

I would love to have unlimited ammo in every single game I played, but they don't give it to me. So, I have to get it myself.

So, you don't feel bad knowing you've cheated yourself out of 28 hours of game play?

Do you only enjoy a game if you win? Do you only enjoy the game if you win in one sitting?

To each their own but, I think it may be more of a problem with short attention span than cheating in single player games.

This completely depends on the game. When I play RCT (Roller Coaster Tycoon) I like to use a trainer to have infinite money and all rides. I've already beaten every park, so I just like to make dream parks and go wild. Now if I were to cheat in like Civ 4 or something, I'm sure nuking the other guys using spears would lose its entertainment value after the first couple times.

And HL2 with the Portal Gun might be a hack, but it is amazing.

Creation games are the ones I'm most likely to cheat in, because I simply what to create, not mill through hours of tedious bullshit to get $$$.

"To each their own" is the vital point, no?

Personally I don't like cheating, but that's because I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive and want to play everything in full, completely, as it was intended and if I cheat it feels like the whole thing unravels. Other people can perfectly well have a different approach (especially if the cost of the game isn't much compared to their spending power, or if they are only renting it anyway!).

And let's be honest - some games have wildly fluctuating difficulty levels and if there's a bit where it suddenly becomes insanely difficult its probably more rational to cheat. I have games where I've been stuck on the same bit for years (every now and then fire it up, try again, fail again). For some I have yet to see the latter part of the game I paid for years ago!

But no, being obsessive I refuse to cheat, even if it means I'll never actually finish the damn thing! I really don't think I'm in a position to say the 'cheaters' have the flawed personality ('short attention span').

Agreed.

Games are designed to give me an hour of pleasure when I have the time, that's it. If I find myself replaying the same scene for that hour, screw that. You take gaming too seriously, you should get out and enjoy life more. They are no reflection of real life in any way, shape or form. Just because you get through any game with out cheating does not make you a great man in real life. Get a grip...

Do you also cheat in Golf?

If I played golf I would indeed cheat. I'd just walk straight to the final hole, put the ball in it by hand, announce 'right that's it I've won, hurrah!' and then go and do something less tedious (e.g. the pub or, er, a computer game, or even an actual sport or a nice walk somewhere that hasn't been ruined with a golf course).

Yes, yes I do, and also cheat in tic tat toe, hopscotch, hide and seek, tether ball, ping pong, beer pong, Candy Land, bingo, Monopoly, tennis, polo, soccer, tetris, baseball, quarters, marbles, chess, checkers, every single arcade game and computer game known to man, I run red lights, beat up old men and ladies, pummel baby seals with golf clubs, after I cheat of course, can't let a good golf club go to waste. Why I don't even need to use golf clubs since I just get a sling shot and use that. But I have never jay walked. ()

I like how a lot of people are saying "Yes, to each their own, BUT cheating ruins the game." That's entirely subjective. Single player cheating might ruin the game experience for you, but that's your opinion, and to say it as a fact is the very same thing as saying it's wrong for people to cheat in SP games.

Good, as long as you are consistently cheating "in real life" as well. That's all that matters, real life consistency. :sneaky:

Cheat is perfectly fine,, WHEN they make stupid long levels that are confusing and requires back-tracking. This is especially terrible when they don't even hint that you need to back track, making you Doubt the fact of back-tracking itself..

to each their own. how you play has no impact on me whatsoever.

personally, I find that cheating makes most games pretty boring. the only times I've ever done it has been on games that are so awful that I can't bring myself to play them properly but I still want to experience the storyline to get my money's worth, so I'll cheat through them (Final Fantasy 8 comes to mind with that).

the one exception to that rule for me are creation games... like, The Sims. 99.9% of my enjoyment of the game comes from building and designing lots, so I'll use the cheat console to give my sims a ridiculous amount of money to buy stuff, turn move-objects on to customize the lot, etc.

and maybe sometimes when Civ 4 makes me really angry :sneaky:

My buddy cheats in every game he plays, so it's annoying to watch him play games and we don't end up being able to relate about how awesomely hard some part of some game was, we don't share the same pay off. Worst part is I can't play multiplayer co-op games with him because then he ruins it for me but that's another matter.

Personally I don't cheat at games until I'm 'done' with them - either I beat them, or got tired of them because I didn't like the game. I don't like sandbox games so I have way more fun in GTA style games by cheating.

So to me if you're cheating at a single player game you don't really like games. Cheaters actually have a different hobby than me, they just both involve games. There's nothing wrong with that, but I don't relate with them as a gamer.

It's like sex.

Going to the gun range is nothing like what a video game offers. Shooting at fake targets with a real gun would be more like masturbating with a sex toy while looking at pictures than actually having sex. The truly analogous part to actual sex would be going out and shooting actual people/monsters/aliens with real guns.

Although maybe you've never had sex before.

There is a cheat feature buildt into most games...it's called:

Easy Mode.

If that isn't enough "help"...buy a boardgame...or rent a movie.

I've always regretted learning about the cheat codes in AoE 1/2 and Starcraft. Even though I've put countless hours into each of them multi-player I've never actually finished any of their campaigns. My 13 year old self just couldn't resist "power overwhelming."

Summation of what most everyone feels on this topic:

1) Whatever floats your boat in single player games, go for it. I don't care for it though.

2) Bring those cheats online however and you and your family can DIAF.

People who think cheating in single player games is "wrong" are a few sandwich's short of a picnic.

Seriously I was browsing around for cheats for Company of Heroes(and would you believe it there are almost NONE that help you progress in the game) and pondering posting a thread about it and my mind went back to numerous times I've heard people over the years talk as if cheating in single player games was morally wrong. How screwy would you have to be to think like this?

I wonder if there is anyone here who has the courage to fess up to this belief?

Company of Heroes has multiplayer; so probably why mods and cheats aren't readily available, and generally frowned-upon.

I generally don't outright cheat in games with god mode, endless ammo, or anything that alters the game play itself; but sometimes I will check out a game's wiki for info/tips on the game itself. This is especially true for sandbox games like FO3. There's tons of stuff to do outside of the main quest line, and it's nice to have a "visitor's guide" to show points of interest.

If you want to cheat in an SP game, then fine, by all means you have the right to do it. However, if you want to cheat in an MP game, then no, by all means what you are doing is wrong.

Nothing wrong with cheating in single player. Who is anyone else to say it ruins MY gaming experience?

That said, I only use cheats to get past ridiculously hard parts. I have better things to do than spend 30 minutes on one minute portion of the game that you can only get past if you do everything just perfectly. If it turns out I can't seem to do it in a reasonable amount of time, screw it....I tried, and now it's time to move on.
