People who wear glasses, how do you keep your lenses from getting scratched?

I've had three glasses and two sunglasses. All have gotten their lenses scratched, no matter how careful I am, and the scratches get annoying. How do you guys manage to not scratch your lenses? Polycarbonate, even with antiscratch coatings, doesn't seem to do anything. Glass would be best, but it's dangerous and heavy.

My glasses are really scratched right now, good thing I don't really wear them unless I'm in class

I've had my glasses for about 3 years, and I've yet to really notice any scratching. I think these are polycarbonate lenses.

EDIT: okay, I see scratches, but not when the glasses are on my head. No biggie

Mine are polycarb, the only time they got scratched was when they got knocked off into a wall. Apart from that not been scratched.

What do you use to clean them?

mine are polycarb, I don't wear them too often, but they're perfect. What are you doing to get them scratched, so long as you don't run into stuff there really is no reason for them to get scratches. I suppose if you're using a really dirty shirt to wipe them off with they will, but I never had a problem using a cotton undershirt. Anything synthetic, though, unless it's specifically designed for glasses will probably screw them up.

What do you use to clean them?

Lens cloth and lens cleaner. The same that I use for my camera lenses.

how scratched exactly? i have whatever lenscrafters uses.. heh.. polycarb i presume. Never had an issue with their lenses. The only time I've had to change them are if my Rx changed, or if I broke my frames.

Oakley's are also in very good condition.. but they mostly reside in my car.

Hmm, not sure why they are getting scratches then.

The scratches start off as small microscratches. Then I somehow manage to get a few bigger scratches here and there.

Do you guys with no scratches use your glass cases all the time?

I've worn glasses for 36+ years now, and really don't notice the scratches when I'm wearing them. Only when I pull them off to clean the lenses do I notice.

For me, the lenses actually last longer than the frames. I have very oily skin, and work outside (thus salting the bows with my sweat), and the frames are usually starting to show either corrosion and/or heavy loss of any metal plating after a couple years. Then I go out and buy new ones, after seeing the optometrist to make sure my prescription hasn't changed.

My trick to scratch free glases, and the ones I wear now are scratch free almost 3 years now, is to not clean them ever with any kind of cloth what so ever. Since getting these I been cleaning them with soap and hot water like you would you dishes. On the final rinse I use pure hot water and slide them through and they dry right away without spots. I found that even when you use glass cloth the dirt and dust on the lenses themselves still go into the soft cloth causing scratch. But like I said now I been using saop and hot wather 3 years and not one scratch.

I wear my glasses all the time (no idea what type), occasionally falling asleep with them on, but never had a problem with scratching. The glasses have the basic anti-scratch coating. There are 2 scratches that are almost invisible to the naked eye and that's it in over 2 years of use. I usually clean them with whatever t-shirt I happen to be wearing.

Pretty much how I keep my glasses clean. Wash them with hot water and soap, only I dry mine with a clean terry-cloth towel. I can't count how many pairs of glasses I ruined using the lens cleaners and lens wipes, or just wiping them off on my t-shirt...Now, I always use water to at least rinse them off, and a clean cotton towel to wipe them when I'm not at home.

I wont even touch these with a cloth after being washed with water. A nice steady slow sream of hot water and slowly oassing the galsses vertical under and they come out clean and dry for me

Like the op I got sick of scratches in my glasses and came up doing that an been happy ever since. OH that and not wearing them near the stove while the wife is cooking so they do get thoes annoying greas spots.

Thanks for the advice!

Sometimes there isn't water readily available I have kinda thick eyebrows, and sometimes oil gets on the lenses as a result, such as during the day or on a backpacking trip. Since I don't have water available, I have to use a cloth of some sort. Bah, I guess I'll just have to always carry a clean cloth around or something and just use my breath.

Glass is very hard to scratch. I've got an... 8 year old Timex watch with mineral glass and it's been through EVERYTHING. No scratches on the glass whatsoever. Watches that I've had with polycarbonate lenses have been scratched all to heck.

Where do you get eyeglasses with glass lenses? I thought they weren't allowed to be sold because they're dangerous if broken...

It's not that hard to not get your lenses scratched. All they do is sit on your head and gather grease and dust.
If you wash them just use soap and some clean cloth, but for me I just use regular handsoap and the hand towel. No need to rub it it with force, just enough to soak up the water from your glasses.
The hand towel should be a towel used only by clean hands if that helps at all... But that is common sense.

I suppose that an answer of, "I don't know how I do it, but I don't have a problem with scratches" isn't much help. I guess I'm just lucky. I don't even know where my glasses case is, so it's definitely not from keeping them in that.
