People who work at banks: Should this work?

Two possibilities:

1) Some banks or printing companies will offer free checks on a promotional basis.
2) My bank lets me get one free cashier's check every month. I used to use it for rent. (Now I'm in a more informal situation and I pay cash.)

If I were a landlord, I wouldn't be keen on taking a starter check or a counter check.

Or any check at all, for that matter - if you're backwards enough to use checks, you're backwards enough to bounce one.

I think my Wells Fargo checks are free as long as I have $50 in the checking account...

Anyhow, I pay all my bills electronically or online... If your landlord has a paypal account or has accounts in the same bank as you do - just do electronics transfer...

Unless you want to hold your money longer for some reason - that could be the reason you want to pay with checks...D:

I can't imagine not having online banking. I always lol when people say "I need to go to the bank to check my balance and make a payment" Really? I can do it from home. I can even put money on my mortgage from home if I want to.

I haven't set foot in a bank in 2-3 years, and even then it was only to pick up foreign currency. I haven't received a physical bill in a LONG time.

Our water district who doesn't have an online payment system nor does monthly deductions needs checks. Wedding vendors, the town for permits, kids' school activities/tuition, alarm company with central station, accountant, lawyers, family members, "gifts"...

Still, "check" is proper in US English and "cheque" is an error.

maybe in the US, the rest of the world (ok, well, part of it) has moved on, my grandad is the only one who has given me a check in a decade. checks are the most expensive way to pay for something around here.

Technically it should work. As long as there is all the correct information ( routing number, account number, name and signature) on the counter item.

That being said, your bank may not allow you to get that many counter items. A lot I have seen will issue some temp checks and encourage to order new checks.

Who ever handles your rent may not allow the counter item though.

Just to let you all know: I have been doing this for months.

I just recently went to my bank to get at least 20 of them. The teller there was baffled. She said it shouldn't work. She looked at my account and saw them clearing. She was like, "Alright... whatever. Here you go."

I have about 25 of them now. It should last me for the rest of the time that I live in this apartment. It should also work for the first expenditure I will pay when I move to a new city (first and last months rent plus security deposit).

A lot of places don't use what you guys are talking about because it costs more money and/or takes more time. My landlord frequently has 20+ checks underneath his door when the first of the month starts to get close.

I all but guarantee you that all those other checks are from checkbooks that people actually bought or received and not checks obtained in this manner.

I'm sure most of them have a checkbook that they ordered. My method works fine, but is free. I've looked into ordering checks, it's about $20. I rather save my $20 for something else. And considering those checks will be invalid when I move... there will be a wasted $20.

I'll live with free counter checks for now.
