People who work at banks: Should this work?

Imagine a customer of your bank wants 20-30 counter checks. (You know, checks that are essentially blank except for the bank routing number already there) Your customer says, "I'm going to use these to pay rent for the apartment I live in."

Will the customer be able to? Will it clear? There's room for an account number at the top. There's room for a name too.

Counter cheques are for people that forgot their cheque book, and IIRC, there used to be a fee per chq, but its been over 25 years since I worked in a bank...
I dont think the bank would be keen to hand out cheque that require customer number and account details willy-nilly as the details can be entered incorrectly leading into bounced payments.

Assuming the landlord accepts checks, I can't see why not, but wouldn't it be easier to setup some form of auto withdrawal so you don't have to worry about missing a payment?

Actually, i dont think this will work for you as most counter cheques have to be cashed at the issuing bank, they are not used as promissory notes to other parties!

If your landlord is willing to accept starter checks, then sure. You might want to check the bank policy on whether they return to you the paid check (or electronically image of it) so you can prove payment in case of dispute, however.

I don't want to pay to pay

Citibank allows me to send more checks than I need each month online. They print it, stick it an envelope, and mail it all at no cost to me. I'm sure other banks out there offer similar services. There might be minimum balance that needs to be maintained, I'm not sure.

I think you are referring to Bank Cheques, not Counter Cheques.....

paper trail doesn't literally mean dead tree paper

also, having been both a renter and a landlord, i dont know wtf you are talking about

This is why I asked people who work at banks.

And really, by banks, I meant banks in the USA.

Most places charge for "starter" checks and even then some places/people will not take starter checks.

Someone said it earlier, use a bill pay function that your bank offers or nut up and spend the $10 - $15 on some checks. I have had the same box of checks for the last 10 years and still use those for rent.

I don't understand why you don't just use your bank's billpay. What do you think happens when you use billpay? If you don't know, a service named Checkfree sends a physical check to the recipient. They print your routing and account number of your actual account. It's just like you writing and sending a check to someone. There are some scenarios where Checkfree will do electronic send, but it's only for big contracted vendors, such as utility companies with agreements to do EDI.

Well, I guess being that Australasian banks lead the world in technology implementations, i guess you might be new to online banking, but I'm sure even the American banks would have these services.

I can't imagine not having online banking. I always lol when people say "I need to go to the bank to check my balance and make a payment" Really? I can do it from home. I can even put money on my mortgage from home if I want to.

It's cheque

Not in the US. Similar to how "plow" is proper here instead of "plough" or "draft" instead of "draught." It all goes back to Noah Webster's spelling simplifications around 1800. Of course, not all of the simplifications took (for example, we don't use "ake" instead of "ache," nor do we use "sley" instead of "sleigh").

Still, "check" is proper in US English and "cheque" is an error.
