Surprised we don't have a resident dentist here.

Ever wonder why we get morning breath? Because saliva production goes down when we sleep. So yes saliva helps too. A lot of things help and quite a few things hurt. Genetic makeup of your tongue surface is also said to be a factor so it can run in families. Any alcohol based mouth wash will indeed dry out your mouth and be harmful more than helpful. There's products like dioxirinse or therabreath that help there... you still want to kill germs in some manner.

As mentioned before, it wouldn't be such a big epidemic if the solution we're simple.

Recently had a discussion about bad breath with a dentist buddy. Interesting info. Different breath smells mean different sources:

-"Garbage breath" is bacterial and can be coming from the esophagus or back of tongue (especially if you have acid reflux).
-"Cornflake" breath is often caused by tartar buildup.
-"Food breath" is just food oils stuck in grooves in your mouth.
-"Sour breath" can be caused by tonsil stones (often after you have a cold or resp. infection).

He also mentioned a new mouthwash from Listerine called "Nightly Reset" is the best dental product he's seen in years. It has some kind of formulation that forms an antibacterial coating on your teeth that protects them for hours. I'm trying it out right now and have to say I do like it!

I haven't heard of that new Listerine mouthwash. I'd maybe give it a shot. Although my dentist recommended to me to use Act mouthwash cause I guess it helps with rebuilding enamel which is thin on my teeth.

It just came out. It works very well (it's the 'no burn' formula), but the side effect is you get that 'toothpaste/orange juice effect' when drinking for several hours afterward.

I ended up getting that new mouthwash (just got my second bottle actually). I like it; it's definitely like 9001 times more intense than the Act I'm used to. I don't get any aftertaste effect from it though cause I only use it at night before bed and just drink some water about a half hour afterwards.

However it does have a rather weird effect, on me anyway. And a lot of other people too, if you read some comments on it on Amazon. People will say it leaves a "residue" or something, and it does to me too, but that isn't some "residue." It's like the uppermost lining of your mouth or something. If you pull a piece out and look at it, it's white skin. LOL. I have a habit of using my tongue to pull out the pieces. It's like itching, you can't help yourself and you get weird pleasure from it. Or I'm just weird. Yeah that might be it.

The white skin is the hydrochloric acid burning away the diseased bits in your mouth.

I think.

Pretty sure he was just commenting on your enthusiasm. Billy Mays mostly sold stuff that worked, but he did with near-cokehead levels of energy.

On the internet, strong emotions are to be feared and derided.

(Forgot about this thread)

Yeah, probably.

Since I'm here though, what a sad comment on the life (or lack thereof) of any poster who feels use of the word 'amazing' constitutes cokehead levels of enthusiasm. I only hope they've long since escaped the basement. It fuggin works, sorry?

Fun fact: the active ingredient in that Oxyfresh stuff is a stablilized and minty version of the chlorine they inject into land fills to kill the stink. There's a version of it + zinc. Destroys everything.

Got a link for that? It doesn't smell chlorine-ey to me.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OxiClean

Wiki says it's Hydrogen Peroxide?

Wut? Hydrochloric acid is one of the worst things you could possibly put in your mouth, will readily dissolve teeth over time. Never heard of bulimics having severe tooth decay from repeated exposure to it in vomit? I guess if you don't have teeth, it will at least be quicker to brush and floss. That's only fair to assume someone should do if they're out in public. There's due diligence then there's excessive to the point of doing more harm than good.

Bad breath, meh.

Wrong Oxy, a mistake I've made countless times myself actually. This is Oxyfresh , which started out as hardcore halitosis treatment but has since diversified in a big way, wow. Been awhile since I used any of their products. Their dog products are good too.

It seems Costco is onboard with them, I think I rest my case. I know they are on Amazon, and there is always ordering direct.

This is what xylitol does. I read the ingredients, contains xylitol. I smell marketing.

I'm not sure it's anti-bacterial so much as it is 'slippery' to the kinds of plaque and buildup we get in our mouths. The film acts as a first layer of defense to acids, but I don't think it's as long lasting as the manufacturers would have us believe. Xylitol actually assists with the re-mineralizing of enamel too, though I am unsure of the specifics, just remember reading a detailed run down on it in a dentist's waiting room once.

Well I left a review on the Listerine website cause I wanted to see what they'd say about that "residue" stuff.

They responded and said that while it is not a common side effect they expect from it (reading reviews on Amazon it seems a lot more common than they expect), it's called "sloughing." They also said they'd like to hear more and left their phone number.

Eh, I don't feel like calling them but I wish they would've said a little more than just "sloughing." Bing time I guess haha.

I bought a tongue scraper because of this thread. Don't look at yourself in the mirror when you do it though.

Hmmm that is good to know. I should look into it for before bed. I find I get ridiculously nasty bad breath overnight no matter how well I brush/floss/mouthwash before bed. This only started about a year ago, I'll ask my dentist about it next appointment. I'm scared whatever is causing the bad breath might also be affecting my teeth so better nip it in the bud before it gets worse.
This can also be due to mucus leaking from the sinus cavity into the oral cavity by means of a soft palette issue.

Scrapping your tongue sounds painful!

Bad breath is also caused by not eating.

I don't think that has anything to do with your oral biome, what you are referring to is that whole ketogenic thing, where you body starts looking elsewhere for fuel because you haven't given it any.

Real halitosis, the kind that makes you stagger away from people when they have it, is produced from bacteria and sulfur. The back of your tongue has these incredibly deep pores that fill up with nastiness, the condition is able to resist both mouth wash use and most scraping. In bad cases people have to go to a specialist and get them extracted, almost like those pimple/zit videos on youtube.

Not painful at all. When you see the white smelly gunk pulled off your tongue by the "scraper" (makes it sound painful, it's not; it's like rubbing your fingers on your tongue or something) you'll be glad you started.

Someone I know can knock you out with their sewer breath because they don't eat for half a day. After they eat it's like a different person. It's also something dentist tell you to do before you come in for a visit.
