I suppose my GF ought to be carrying this stuff.
Any reason not to carry it?
Which brand or kind is best?

I wasn't aware that there is a difference. I thought "pepper spray" was just generic mace.

If you're going to carry something for protection, carry something works consistently against every opponent.

Pepper spray, mace, & tasers are just asking to get your ass kicked.

Lotta confusion in this thread.

Mace = a brand name. It contains a mix of pepper spray & tear gas.

There are many different brands of pepper spray, but try to get 10% if possible. And get the stream, not the stuff that will "fog" and get into your woman's eyes as well. (I'm not sure about the specific restrictions, though, so you may not be able to get that stuff).

I assume when you people say Tazer you mean stun gun? I don't believe that Tazers are available to the general public. And, Viper, the X26 Tazer works on anyone because it causes a full-body muscle lockup, rather than working on pain compliance like sprays & stun guns.

knife > spray

get a knife, mace and pepper spray can just be a false sense of security. only thing that beats getting stabbed is getting shot.

i used to sell stun guns to the public at the mall so i think they are availible (remington knives/shavers). we had the one that shot the two wires as well, and it spit out little things with a serial number on them, so the cops could trace you if you were randomly shooting folks.

unless tazer is a brand name or something, and then i'm totally wrong.

Tazer is a brand name, and the X26 is a relatively new product. According to my use-of-force instructor, there was talk of them making it available to the general product, but various Law Enforcement groups lobbied to keep them LE-only. It's possible that the M26 (the older model that uses pain compliance) is more widely available, but I'm not certain.

Edit: Hmm, looks like I'm spelling that wrong. It is Taser.

Tazers suck. I used to have a 100,000 volt stun gun that I would shock myself with at parties ... etc. It didn't really phase me too much. It stung a little bit, however, there's no way a little battery powered electrical device is going to stop a drunk, let alone a a motivated criminal.

I would say get the mace or pepper spray. Back when my sister started college I bought her some pepper spray, it was the "extra strength" version ... like 10% instead of 5% or something. She has had to use it once, and it did the trick. (she was a track star in high school ... so the foot smashing to the balls of the wannabe pursesnatcher and then sprinting fast probably also helped her get away safely, however, I'm sure the pepper spray helped.)

EDIT ... I may be wrong about the stun guns as I hope there are ones that are MUCH better on the market. However, the one I played with would have been extremely innefective for any type of self defense. At least against a 250 pound masochist.

Again, the new Tasers lock up all muscles in the human body. The old Tasers (you're probably referring to a simple stun gun) used pain compliance, which the various sprays use.

I thought to some effect Pepper Spray/Mase also cause temporary blindness ......
I guess I'll have to find someone who has one of the new tasers to see how well it works.

They're not supposed to. It just burns like hell. Some people have allergic reactions to it, though.
