My Machine

Lian Li Lancool PC-K63
i5 2500k stock + CM Hyper 212 +
8gb G.Skill Ripjaw @ 1600
256gb m4 crucial 6gbps SSD
500gb W.D. HDD
600W Corsair GS PSU
ASUS GTX670 DCII NON-T @ 1215core
U2412M Dell Ultrasharp eIPS Monitor
G930 Wireless Logitech Headset

at first I thought it was my PSU. I live in las vegas and this summer we had a couple days that exceeded 110 degrees. The AC isnt on full blast while I am at work and I usually keep my computer on all the time. even with the ssd i know its shameful hah.

so I went and replaced my PSU with a 800 cooler master silent pro gold

however i am still having issues where i shouldnt have. by the way temperatures do seem better with the psu i thought that was worth mentioning.

so in battlefield 3 with my stock i5 2500k and my 670 gets 60fps usually between 50-60 ish BUT when a tank shoots or a big explosion happens the fps cuts in have. sometimes hitting 28. guild wars 2 is almost unplayable.

borderlands 2 was also pretty unplayable when lots of things were going on with physX on.

I think the GPU may be defective but I am not sure, my MOBO is cheap i bought it on a budget I am worried that could be the culprit too. its the P8H67-m le

also all of my drivers and my bios is up to date. and i play at 1920x1200

TL;DR
computer gets crazy drops in fps when large amount of effects go off ( drops shouldnt happen with this machine )

first no matter what machine when huge explosives happen in BF3 your FPS will drop but it shouldn't drop that low as mines doesn't even drop that low. try seeing if you can overclock your cpu on stock volts which it should

edit: is the gpu stable with that core clock as my setup gets 50+ FPS in BF3 on ultra w/o AA @1920x1080

yeah, I'm aware that your fps should drop but like you said not that significantly. which is why i am posting!

the terrible quality of the MOBO does not allow Overclocking unfortunately or else i wouldve bumped the multiplier, since it can probably get 3.8-4ghz without a voltage increase from what i have seen.

the core clock is plenty stable and can go higher but for the sake of testing i have removed the overclock completely in order to eliminate that as a cause

try overclocking the i5-2500K to like 4GHz you shouldn't have to mess with the volts at all then try BF3 again and post back ?

Huh? The H77 chipset was never designed for overclocking. A part that doesn't do something that it was never meant to do isn't terrible quality.

Anyway, load up GPU-Z and switch over to the Sensors tab. Make sure that fan speed, temperature, and GPU load are graphing. Then bring up the Task Manager and switch over to the Performance tab. Play BF3 as normal, but alt-tab out and/or quit soon after you see a performance drop. See if you can correlate that drop to any unusual variations in any of the graphs.

My first thought when I read the OP was: Drivers (Well, actually it was something entirely different as a seriously hot chick walked by at the same time, but i digress).

Are all drivers up to date? Mobo chipset, audio and video in particular?

Driiiiiiiiiiiiiivers?

Anyway, does BF3 use PhysX? Could try disabling that.

Are you coming from ATI ? Some things are tangled making it slow like that when it shouldn't be. If you cant straighten it out with different nVidia drivers. Then you need a clean install. gl
