If you have bought a netbook before do you really need external DVD drive or use flash usb to copy cd/dvd? I am not sure whether to buy external mini dvd drive or buy another flash usb drive with either 32 or 64GB?

Good question, Rottie. I think it depends on how you intend to use the netbook. If you have a good way to put CDs and DVDs onto flash media, it would make sense to prefer flash media.

But, if you are, say, on the road, and you need to view a CD or DVD, then you would need the external DVD/CD drive.

BTW - yesterday, I was in Costco just browsing, and I saw that they had Acer netbooks bundled with very compact, USB, DVD/CD drives.

If it were my choice, I would have both capabilities on hand.

Once the OS is loaded, programs such as PowerISO can handle pretty much all optical requirements, unless you need to view a CD out in the field as corkyg advised. After formatting my netbook with a new OS using an external optical, I've never needed one again. Software is loaded with ISOs, using PowerISO to mount them.

Of course, in order to make use of that you probably WONT want a netbook with a 16GB flash hard drive.

Recommend OP tries to get one with a 160GB standard laptop hard drive.

My Dell Mini 10 has 160GB HDD I just found out I will not able to add memory. Now that I might not be able to run Win 7 with 1GB memory...runs sluggish?

i installed OS from a usb key, and thus never attached an optical drive to my netbook.

programs i was too lazy to burn images for, i shared my main computer's dvd drive over the network and installed programs that way. copy protection doesnt matter at the install phase. then i used mini-images for certain programs that required a CD when running.
