Persistant Crashing Problem

My brother's PC (which I built) is always crashing. He has a 900MHz Tbird, 256MB of RAM, and WinXP. He is checking to see if the crashes occur spontaneously or only when he is online. It may be that it is only when he is online. I have updated all of the drivers and removed Adaptec's burner software. All of the parts are seated properly.

Anyone know why this problem may exist? or what can be done about it?

What type of motherboard, ram and video card does he have. Since he is running XP he may have run into the infinite loop, BSOD, display driver problem that many people are experiencing with Nvidia cards, win xp and for the most part but not limited to VIA mobos. Head over to Via Arena for more help. To fix the problem I had I had to increase my I/O voltage slightly on my mobo and install the latest leaked 27.10 display drivers.

More specs:
Mobo: not sure
CPU - 900 Tbird
RAM: 256MB
Sound - integrated
Video - Kryo II
External Zip
Internal burner
floppy
NIC
Modem

Windows is fully up to date
Video card drivers up to date (XP compatible)
Adaptec Burner software expunged (known problems)

Current plan is as follows:

1. remove modem - see if problem persists
2. remove NIC - see if problem persists
3. Part out computer and buy new one

Check to see if the T-bird is a socket T-bird or a slot one. Somebody I know has a KX133 mobo that has been everything but stable for him, but my KT133 based MSI K7T Turbo-L is rock solid

Ok well it is unlikely the problem I mentioned as I haven't heard any problems with the Kyro in XP. Best plan is to strip the computer down and install the main components. Then add components until you get a problem. Annoying but I think that's all you can do.

Hmm, how was Win XP installed, clean or updated?

Last night I decided to take the plunge and update to WinXP from Win98SE, big problems. Explorer would crash shortly after entering windows, even in safe mode! I re-installed WinXP telling it to replace my current install and everythings been fine since.

Could be the ram, especially if it's DDR ram, my crucial 256mb PC2100 stick broke after 3 months of use.

After working on the PC for a while last night, I am almost positive it is a heat related issue. The computer has made a couple of trips in a car, so I think the HSF may be slightly ajar.

Anyone think that an extra case fan and application of arctic silver won't solve the problem?

And you do not know what kind off Motherboard is in it ? I bet that your motherboard is not compatable with XP at the moment, you probally need to flash the bios ! Why dont you try getting in the bios and setting it to default settings. try that then if that does not work pull the board out and find out what kind it is, and update the bios! If that does not work find some new ram or borrow some and try that ! If all else fails use it as a frisbie and buy a new motherboard or install win98!
