Persistent "Limited or no connectivity"..

I recently upgraded my computer. Everything works fine but the network adapter. My internet connection has been perfectly solid for the last 8 months, but when I tried it with my new computer, it gets stuck at "acquiring network address" for a minute before it times out and shows "Limited or no connectivity". The network is as simple as it gets.. wall jack to modem to network adapter. I have it set to obtain automatic ip and dns. I am running no firewalls nor anti-viruses.

I have two network cards on this computer, one wireless and one wired. I am currently limping on my neighbor's wireless until I can get this figured out. But the fact that wireless still works is weird..

I have tried resetting the modem, and the ipconfig /release /renew thing. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. I've tried the windows sp2 fix and the winsock fix as well.

ipconfig in cmd prompt shows:

C:\Documents and Settings\pat>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 10:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.184.108
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 5:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Elephants
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.18
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

169.254.x.x means....... that the computer isn't even seeing the DHCP server? I tried ipconfig /flushdns and the winsock clearing command as well.

Oh, another WEIRD, weird thing.. I tried connecting the modem to my router to my computer briefly. Oddly enough, ipconfig showed typical ip/dns/gateway values. I could even actually play subspace, but I _couldn't_ browse the web. I messed around with my router settings to see if I could browse the web too, and suddenly the connection disappeared all together. So very odd.

try assigning one manually. Do you have access to the router? Usually, this happens to me when there is an ip conflict, the DHCP server/router is not working(maybe try turning off/on), or cable is bad.

Disconnect the modem for 30mins or so... Just resetting isn't enough. Most cable modems are set up to assign one ip to a specific mac address.... Once you change NICs the mac has changed so you need to leave the modem unplugged long enough for it to lose that assignment and acquire a one from the new nic....

no luck with the 30 minute reset. it remains a 169.254.x.x ip and 255.255.0.0 mask

i do have access to the router. what do i set the tcp/ip numbers to? at the moment i am trying ip address 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0, and gateway 192.168.0.1, but i don't know what to try for the dns server settings.

also.. could this be an irq conflict problem? i've been reading about that a little bit. in my device manager it shows that my graphics card and my wired network card are on the same irq number (16). is that a problem?

Modem at 192.168.0.1?

What is the model of your modem is it a Modem Router combo?

Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

the modem is a speedstream 5100. i have no router in between the modem and the computer. device manager is showing that the drivers for the card are working properly. no ghosts.

and..... irq conflict.. i mentioned earlier that my graphics card was on the same irq number as my wired network card. they are both 16 as shown in the device manager. is this a problem?

You need to set a static IP address of 192.168.0.2 subnet of 255.255.255.0 gateway of 192.168.0.1 and then see if you can hit the router.

If you're using DSL protocol and are plugged straight into the line you need to set the PC for DHCP and install the PPPOE protocol.

i called tech support about this problem and they suggested that if i wasn't even able to get access to the modem that it wasn't a pppoe issue.

nonetheless, i tried creating a pppoe connection and put in my account and pass, and it timed out.
